How to Get SEO Clients: Pick a Niche With Demand, Then Pitch It

Updated 1 November 2026 · Agencies · By Matt

Most guides list 10 to 44 ways to find SEO clients and leave you to pick. This one starts with where the demand is: we measured US searches for "SEO for [industry]" across 100 industries in Ahrefs on 1 November 2026, then built the steps around the niches that search.

Quick answer

Pick one industry that searches for SEO help, build one proof page for it, then email businesses in that industry one specific problem you found on their site. Referrals and partners come after the first clients.

Biggest niche: legal. "SEO for lawyers" gets 5,600 US searches a month.

Our pick: targeted cold email with one real finding.

Our data

Of 100 industries, 42 get 500 or more US searches a month for SEO help, and 32 of those have a Keyword Difficulty of 5 or lower. 20 industries get fewer than 100.

Pick a niche that searches for SEO

These are the 15 industries with the most US searches for "SEO for [industry]". CPC is what advertisers, mostly SEO agencies, bid per click on that search, so it shows how hard agencies compete for that niche.

IndustryUS searches a monthKeyword DifficultyCPC
Lawyers5,6007$25
Law firms3,70013$25
Dentists2,2004$25
Plumbers2,1005$12
Contractors1,9001$8
Roofers1,8001$10
Electricians1,7000$6
Accountants1,6003$3.50
Real estate1,5007$7
Therapists1,5005$10
Startups1,4009$8
Healthcare1,4007$1.20
Doctors1,3002$8
Financial advisors1,3003$10
Photographers1,3004$3

Three things stand out. Legal is the largest and has the highest CPCs: personal injury lawyers get 1,200 searches at $30 a click, and criminal defense lawyers only 600 at $45. Trades such as roofers, contractors and electricians have real demand with a Keyword Difficulty of 0 or 1. And some niches barely search at all: barbers, tattoo shops, daycares and staffing agencies each showed 0 to 10 a month.

Method: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, United States, one "seo for [industry]" wording per industry, 1 November 2026. Variants such as "roofing seo" share a parent topic, so treat each row as a floor for that niche.

Build proof for that niche

  • One "SEO for [industry]" page on your own site. Ahrefs rates 32 of the 42 biggest niches 5 or lower on its 0 to 100 difficulty scale, meaning the pages ranking now have few backlinks. A focused page is a realistic target, and it shows the prospect you can do for yourself what you sell.
  • One case study, even a small one: the search, where the site started, what you changed, where it ended.
  • A short checklist of that niche's problems, written from the sites you review for outreach.
  • Share wins with Search Console screenshots, and ask before you name a client.

Cold outreach with one real finding

Build the list from Google Maps and the regular results for "[service] [city]" in a few cities, plus the industry's own directories. Businesses running ads on their own service search are already paying for leads, so they are worth a closer look. Note the businesses on page 2 and below, and what the page 1 sites have that they don't. Then write one email per business:

Subject{Firm} on page 2 for "personal injury lawyer {city}"
BodyHi {name}, I searched "personal injury lawyer {city}" and {Firm} sits on page 2, behind {competitor}. Their page lists each case type with its own section and yours is one paragraph. I wrote down the three changes I'd make. Want me to send them?

We would lead with one specific, checkable observation rather than a generic audit offer. If they say yes, send the note, then offer a 15-minute call and a one-page proposal. If they don't reply, one follow-up a few days later with a second finding is enough. Keep it short, send from a domain set up for outreach, and read whether cold emailing is legal where your prospects are. More openers are in sales prospecting email templates.

Make a small first offer

A fixed-price first project with one goal is easier to say yes to than a 12-month retainer. Price it by scope and the single result you promise, not by hours. For the trades and dentists in the table, a Google Business Profile and map pack project for one city fits, since their work is local. Turn it into a retainer once the first result is visible.

Referrals and partners

  • Ask every happy client for one introduction in their own industry.
  • Partner with web designers and developers who build sites but don't do SEO.
  • Offer white-label work to other agencies if you have spare capacity. See white label link building.

Deliver and keep them

Send a short monthly report tied to the searches they care about, so progress is visible, and write down how you work so it scales past you. Our guides on SEO reporting, SEO agency SOPs and agency SEO tools cover each part.

For the links part of delivery, MentionAgent finds blogs in each client's niche and emails their owners a pitch, from $99 a month, with each extra client site $99 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Which niche is best for getting SEO clients?

By US search demand, legal: "seo for lawyers" gets 5,600 searches a month and "seo for law firms" 3,700, with overlap, and four legal wordings cost $25 to $45 a click. Dentists, plumbers, contractors and roofers follow.

How do I find SEO clients fast?

Pick one industry, list businesses in it that rank badly for their own service and city, and email each one a single specific finding.

Can a new agency rank for "SEO for [industry]"?

Ahrefs rates 32 of the 42 industries we measured with 500 or more US searches a month at 5 or lower on its 0 to 100 Keyword Difficulty scale, which means the pages ranking now have few backlinks. That makes them realistic targets, not guaranteed ones.

Should I offer free SEO audits?

We would open with a short note that names one real problem, and keep the full audit for after the first call.

Can a beginner get SEO clients?

Yes, if the first offer is small and checkable. Start with one niche, use your own "SEO for [industry]" page as your first case study, and sell a fixed project with one goal before a retainer.

Is cold emailing businesses legal?

In most places, with conditions such as a real sender and an opt-out. See our guide on whether cold emailing is illegal before you start.

Win the client. Hand off the outreach.
