Fresh Index vs Historic Index

This is the headline feature gap between Lite and Pro.

  • Fresh Index (Lite + Pro): rolling 90-day backlink index, refreshed continuously. Useful for catching new and recent links.
  • Historic Index (Pro only): the long-term link database going back many years. Useful for tracking a domain's link history, finding lost links, and full-archive competitor analysis.

If you only need recent backlinks, Lite is enough. If you do agency-style historical link audits or competitor link investigations, Pro is the right tier.

What's included on Lite

  • Site Explorer: backlink lookups for any domain or URL, with Trust Flow, Citation Flow, top pages, and anchor text.
  • Bulk Backlink Checker: upload up to a few hundred URLs and check Trust Flow, Citation Flow, and basic link metrics in one batch.
  • Topical Trust Flow (basic): the niche-relevance signal Majestic is known for.
  • Fresh Index access with a defined monthly Analysis Unit allowance.
  • Single user seat; additional seats charged separately.

What you get on Pro

  • Historic Index: the full long-term link database for deep link audits and historical analysis.
  • Link Context: the surrounding paragraph for any backlink, useful for spotting low-quality contexts.
  • Clique Hunter: finds domains that link to multiple competitors but not to you. The classic link-prospecting workflow.
  • Solo Links: filter for links that appear once on a domain, helpful for editorial-link discovery.
  • Larger Analysis Unit allowance for bulk checks and heavy reports.

The API plan

API is built for tools, dashboards, and agencies that need programmatic access to Majestic data. Most teams don't need it. If you build internal SEO tooling or sell SEO data to clients, the API tier exposes Trust Flow, Citation Flow, anchor text, and link metrics at scale.

What about Analysis Units?

Majestic meters heavier reports through Analysis Units. Lite includes a smaller monthly allowance, Pro includes a larger one, and API includes the most. Most quick lookups don't burn many units, but bulk checks and heavy backlink exports add up. You can buy top-up units if you run out mid-month.

Costs to watch for

  1. Historic Index gating. Lite is Fresh Index only. If you need long-term link history, Pro is the entry point, not Lite.
  2. Per-user costs. Both Lite and Pro are single-seat. Adding teammates is per-seat per month.
  3. Annual billing lock-in. Annual saves roughly two months versus monthly, but mid-year switches forfeit the unused months.
  4. Unit overages. Heavy bulk-check users on Lite can burn the monthly Analysis Unit allowance fast. Plan ahead.
  5. Backlinks only. Majestic doesn't do keyword research, site audits, or rank tracking. You'll likely pair it with another tool, which adds to total spend.
Test yourself

You audit historical backlink profiles for client sites going back 5+ years. Which Majestic plan fits the job?

🎉

Right. Lite is Fresh Index only (rolling ~90 days). For 5+ years of backlink history, you need the Historic Index, which starts on Pro.

💡

Lite gives you the Fresh Index (recent links only). For multi-year link audits you need the Historic Index, available on Pro at ~$100/month.

Test yourself

You only need a quick Trust Flow + Citation Flow check before pitching a guest post. Do you need a paid plan?

🎉

Right. Public Site Explorer on majestic.com shows Trust Flow and Citation Flow for any domain at limited depth. Free, no account needed for the basics.

💡

For one-off Trust Flow / Citation Flow checks, the free public Site Explorer covers the job. Save the paid plans for ongoing or bulk work.

Is Majestic worth the price?

Majestic is worth it if you:

  • Do backlink work weekly and need a dedicated, lower-priced tool
  • Use Trust Flow and Citation Flow as your link-quality metrics
  • Run historical link audits (Pro)
  • Need niche-relevance signals from Topical Trust Flow

Majestic is probably not worth it if you:

  • Need an all-in-one SEO suite (use Ahrefs or SEMrush)
  • Need keyword research, site audits, or rank tracking
  • Only do one-off backlink checks (the free Site Explorer is enough)
  • Mostly track brand mentions and chase unlinked references (use MentionAgent)

Frequently asked questions

How much does Majestic cost?

Lite at ~$50/month, Pro at ~$100/month, API at ~$400/month. Annual billing is roughly two months free vs paying month to month.

Does Majestic have a free plan?

Anyone can run free Site Explorer lookups on majestic.com to see top backlinks, Trust Flow, and Citation Flow with restricted depth. Verified site owners can access more detail on their own domains.

What is the difference between Majestic Lite and Pro?

Lite gives you Site Explorer with the Fresh Index, Bulk Backlink Checker, and basic reports. Pro adds the Historic Index, Link Context, Clique Hunter, Solo Links, and a much higher unit allowance.

What is cheaper than Majestic?

Mangools (~$30/month) and Ubersuggest (~$29/month) are cheaper but tilt toward keyword research. Ahrefs Starter is around $29/month. For brand monitoring with outreach, MentionAgent is $99/month flat.

Does Majestic charge per user?

Lite and Pro are single-user accounts by default. Multi-user access is available as an add-on with per-seat pricing. The API tier is for programmatic access rather than UI seats.

Does Majestic bill monthly or annually?

Both. Annual billing is discounted, typically equivalent to two months free vs monthly.

What are units in Majestic and how do I avoid running out?

Majestic uses Analysis Units to meter heavier reports. Lite includes a smaller monthly allowance, Pro a larger one. Plan around your monthly volume, top up units if needed, and avoid running the same report repeatedly.

Can I downgrade my Majestic plan later?

Yes. Downgrades take effect at the next billing cycle. Annual plans typically don't refund unused months at the higher tier, so time downgrades close to renewal.

Is there a free trial for Majestic?

Majestic doesn't offer a traditional time-limited free trial on paid plans. Instead, the public Site Explorer on majestic.com lets anyone run free backlink lookups with limited depth. Verified site owners can also access more detail on their own domains for free.

How fresh is Majestic's backlink data?

The Fresh Index (Lite and Pro) is a rolling window updated continuously, so most new backlinks appear within days. The Historic Index (Pro and API only) doesn't refresh in real time but goes back many years for full link history audits.

Does Majestic accept payment in non-USD currencies?

Yes. Majestic is a UK company and accepts payment in GBP, USD, and EUR through its checkout. The displayed price changes based on your selected currency, and VAT may apply depending on your billing country.
