Pet Store Marketing

September 2026 · Four metro searches measured against the national chains that rank in all of them

Our data

Pet store searches returned median Domain Ratings of 32 in Phoenix, 66 in Dallas, 66 in Denver and 80 in Atlanta in September 2026. Petco at DR 81 appeared in three of the four cities.

Atlanta is nearly closed: five results, three of them national chains or Yelp.

Phoenix is open: five of nine slots went to independents, led by a DR 28 shop at position one.

Domain Ratings pulled 7 September 2026, United States, English.

Quick answer

You cannot win the generic term against Petco and PetSmart. The independent slots go to shops that rank on a specialism: raw and natural food, a self-service dog wash, grooming, or a boutique.

A recurring intermediary: vetster.com at DR 66 runs locally owned pet shop lists in three cities.

Local lists rank too: a DR 15 blog holds a Denver slot with a nine best independents piece.

Four metros, measured

On 7 September 2026 we ran a pet store search in four large metros and pulled a live Ahrefs Domain Rating for every organic result. Thirty two results:

SearchResultsMedian DRNational chain slotsDR at position one
pet store phoenix932228
pet store dallas966381
pet store denver966211
pet store atlanta580381

Atlanta returned only five organic results and three of them were Petco, PetSmart and Pet Supermarket. That is close to a closed page. Phoenix returned nine, five of which were independents.

The independents are not weaker in Atlanta than in Phoenix. The difference is how much room the chains and Yelp left.

The chains that rank in every city

Petco appeared in all four cities and Pet Supplies Plus in three, both through store locator subdomains built for exactly this search.

Competing with those on the words pet store is not a plan. What the data shows is that between two and five slots per city still go to independents, and the ones that get them all have something in particular to say.

Where independents still hold the page

Phoenix gives five of nine slots to independents. My Pet Market at DR 28 takes first place ahead of Petco. Animal Kingdom at DR 25, Pet Food Depot at DR 19, Petland Phoenix at DR 32 and Noble Beast at DR 9 take four more.

Denver is similar in shape. Perfect Pets at DR 11 holds first place ahead of Pet Supplies Plus at DR 72, and Dog Savvy at DR 28 and Luke and Company at DR 17 take further slots.

In both cities the independent in first place beat a chain domain more than twice its strength. Read their titles and each one leads with a category rather than with the words pet store: dog food and cat food, natural market for pets, boutique and spa, fine pet supply.

Locally owned lists rank in three of four cities

vetster.com at DR 66 appeared in Dallas, Phoenix and Denver, each time with a top locally owned pet shops page. In Denver a small blog at DR 15 also ranks with a nine best independents piece.

These lists exist precisely because searchers want the alternative to Petco, and they rank because that intent is real. Being in one puts you on a page that outranks your own site, on the exact query you cannot win directly.

Because the theme of these lists is being locally owned, inclusion usually requires nothing more than telling the publisher you exist and are independent. Very few shops do.

Rank on a specialism, not on the category

Every independent that ranked in our four metros did it on something specific. The categories visible in the data are natural and raw food, dog food and cat food specialists, boutique and gifts, and grooming spa.

Others worth building are raw feeding, prescription and veterinary diets, breed-specific supplies, small animals, reptiles, aquarium and fish, birds, puppy starter kits and senior pet care.

Aquarium and reptile deserve special mention. Both need advice a chain cannot give, both have hobbyist communities that talk to each other constantly, and both bring customers back for consumables weekly.

Services beat products for an independent

Products are where a chain has scale. Services are where it does not, and each one is its own local search: grooming, self-service dog wash, nail trims, training classes, puppy socialisation, boarding or daycare if you have space, aquarium maintenance, and delivery.

A self-service dog wash is a particularly good example, because it brings people into the shop weekly with a wet dog and a reason to buy something while they wait. One of the Dallas results ranks on exactly that combination.

Each service should have its own page with prices, what is included, how long it takes and how to book. That is more useful to a customer and more rankable than a services list.

The brands you carry that the chains do not

Independent pet stores usually carry premium and specialist food brands that big chains do not stock, and those brands are searched by name plus a location.

A page for each significant brand you carry, saying which formulas you keep, what sizes and whether you can order specific items, captures a customer who has already decided what they want and only needs to know who has it.

Most of those brands also run a where to buy or stockist locator, so building the page and asking for the listing are the same job done twice. That is the most reliable link in this category.

Brand stockist locators first, for the reason above. Then: locally owned round-up lists like the ones already ranking, veterinarians and clinics you work with, groomers and trainers you refer to, rescue and shelter organisations you support, dog parks and pet friendly city guides, breed clubs, and local press covering adoption events.

Rescue partnerships are the strongest of these and the most natural. A shop hosting adoption days gets linked by the rescue, mentioned locally and visited by people who are about to need everything a new pet requires.

Our guides to link outreach and blogger outreach tools cover reaching the publishers running those lists.

Doing the contact work

Getting onto the brand stockist locators, the locally owned lists, the vet and groomer referral pages and the rescue partner pages means finding a named contact at each and asking. It is the highest yield work available to an independent and it competes with running the shop.

MentionAgent does the asking. It identifies the brands, vets, rescues and list publishers worth reaching, finds a named contact at each, and sends the pitch from your own domain so the reply lands with you. Every rating in the tables above came from its research pass.

In a category where the chains hold the generic term, being inside the lists that rank above them matters more than your own position. Our link building checklist covers the sequence.

Frequently asked questions

How competitive is pet store marketing?

It varies by city more than by shop quality. Median Domain Rating measured on 7 September 2026 was 32 in Phoenix, 66 in Dallas, 66 in Denver and 80 in Atlanta. Atlanta returned only five organic results, three of them national chains or Yelp.

Can an independent outrank Petco?

On the generic term, rarely. But in Phoenix an independent at DR 28 took first place ahead of Petco at DR 81, and in Denver a shop at DR 11 beat Pet Supplies Plus at DR 72. Both led with a category rather than with the words pet store.

What should an independent rank on instead?

A specialism. Natural and raw food, dog and cat food specialists, boutique and gifts, grooming spa, raw feeding, prescription diets, small animals, reptiles, aquarium and birds. Aquarium and reptile are especially good because they need advice a chain cannot give and bring weekly repeat purchases.

What are the locally owned lists that keep ranking?

Pages built for people looking for an alternative to the chains. Vetster at DR 66 ran one in Dallas, Phoenix and Denver, and a DR 15 blog ranked in Denver with a nine best independents piece. Inclusion usually needs nothing more than telling the publisher you exist and are independent.

Which services are worth their own pages?

Grooming, self-service dog wash, nail trims, training classes, puppy socialisation, boarding or daycare, aquarium maintenance and delivery. Services are where a chain has no scale advantage, and a self-service wash in particular brings customers in weekly with a reason to buy while they wait.

Where do pet store links come from?

Brand stockist locators first, since you already carry premium brands the chains do not and most of those brands publish a where to buy page. Then vets and clinics, groomers and trainers, rescue organisations you host adoption days for, dog parks and pet friendly city guides, and breed clubs.
