Hardware Store Marketing
Hardware store searches returned median Domain Ratings of 27 in Dallas, 55 in Phoenix, 81 in Denver and 83 in Atlanta in September 2026. The spread is the widest we have measured in one category.
What drives it: Ace at DR 83, True Value at 78, Do It Best at 78 and Lowe's at 88 take between one and four slots per city.
Independents still rank: a Phoenix store at DR 0.2 and a Denver store at DR 7 both made page one.
Domain Ratings pulled 7 September 2026, United States, English.
Your own store page on a buying group site competes with you. The searches worth owning are the specialist ones: decorative, architectural, industrial and builders hardware, where no chain ranks at all.
Dallas proves it: a decorative hardware store at DR 2 sits at position two.
Directories take a lot here: two to four slots per city, including Yellow Pages and MapQuest.
Four metros, measured
On 7 September 2026 we ran a hardware store search in four large metros and pulled a live Ahrefs Domain Rating for every organic result. Thirty four results:
| Search | Results | Median DR | Chain or buying group slots | Directory slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| hardware store dallas | 9 | 27 | 2 | 2 |
| hardware store phoenix | 6 | 55 | 1 | 2 |
| hardware store denver | 10 | 81 | 2 | 4 |
| hardware store atlanta | 9 | 83 | 4 | 3 |
A 56 point spread across four similar cities is the widest we have recorded, and it is not caused by the independents. It is caused by how many chain and buying group location pages Google chose to show.
Atlanta gives seven of its nine slots to chains and directories. Dallas gives four of nine. That single difference decides whether an independent has room.
The buying groups are the competition
Most independent hardware stores belong to a buying group, and those groups run large websites with a page for every member store:
| Site | DR | Metros found in |
|---|---|---|
| lowes.com | 88 | Atlanta |
| acehardware.com | 83 | Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, Phoenix |
| doitbest.com | 78 | Dallas, Atlanta |
| truevalue.com | 78 | Denver, Atlanta |
Ace appeared in all four cities. In Atlanta it appeared twice, and one of those results was for a store in Atlanta, Michigan rather than Atlanta, Georgia, which is worth noticing: these pages rank on domain strength even when the match is imperfect.
You cannot outrank a DR 83 domain on a generic city term, and if you are an Ace or True Value member you are in the odd position of competing with a page about your own store.
The one market with room
Dallas is the exception and it shows what an open page one looks like in this category. Elliott's Hardware at DR 26 holds first place, ahead of Ace at DR 83. Nob Hill Decorative Hardware at DR 2 holds second. Dallas North Builders Hardware at DR 18, Pierce Fine Hardware at DR 27 and Rooster Hardware at DR 10 take three more.
Five of the nine slots are independents, and the second placed one is a DR 2 site sitting above a national domain.
Read the names and the pattern is clear. Decorative hardware. Fine hardware. Builders hardware. These are not general stores competing on the word hardware; they are specialists whose pages say exactly what they sell.
Specialist categories are where independents win
The same pattern holds in Phoenix, where McFadden-Dale Industrial Hardware at DR 0.2 takes position two and Clyde Hardware at DR 27 ranks as a decorative specialist.
The categories visible in our data are decorative and architectural hardware, fine and designer hardware, builders hardware, and industrial hardware. Others worth owning are cabinet hardware, door hardware, restoration and period hardware, fasteners, keys and locks, and anything requiring an assistant who knows what they are talking about.
Every one of these has two things in common: a chain location page does not target them, and the customer searching is often a trade buyer or a designer rather than a homeowner. That makes them both easier to rank and more valuable per visit.
Your buying group listing competes with you
If you are an Ace, True Value or Do It Best member, the group runs a page for your store on a domain far stronger than yours. On a generic search it will usually win.
That is not entirely bad. The listing sends customers to your store, and it is a strong relevant link if it points at your own site. Two things are worth checking: whether that page carries a link to your website at all, and whether the hours, phone number and address on it match yours exactly. Mismatched details across strong listings cause real problems for local ranking.
Then aim your own site somewhere the group page does not go. The group page is generic by design. Yours can be about the twelve categories you actually stock in depth.
What you stock and what you do
The reason people choose an independent over a big box is that the independent has the odd thing and someone who can help. Neither fact is usually on the website.
Publish the categories you carry in depth, and be specific about brands and sizes. Publish the services: key cutting, glass and screen repair, blade and tool sharpening, paint mixing and colour matching, pipe threading and cutting, hose and chain by the foot, propane exchange, small engine repair, equipment hire, and delivery.
Each service is its own local search with its own intent and almost no competition, because a chain location page does not list them individually. Key cutting and screen repair in particular are searched constantly and answered badly.
The trade account is the quiet revenue
Contractors, property managers, facilities teams and maintenance crews buy differently: they want an account, a delivery, a will-call desk, quantity pricing and someone who answers the phone.
A trade page covering account terms, delivery radius, order cut-off times, quantity discounts and a named contact reaches a customer worth many times a weekend homeowner, and it faces almost no competition because chains handle that centrally.
This is also where the best links in the category live, because the contractors and property managers you serve often list their suppliers.
Links a store can realistically get
Your buying group listing first, checked for a working link to your site. Then: the brands you stock, many of which run dealer or stockist locators; local contractor and trade associations; property management companies listing suppliers; neighbourhood and business district associations; historical or preservation societies if you carry period hardware; and local press, which likes a long-standing independent store as a story.
Stockist locators are the most reliable. If you carry a paint, tool or hardware brand, that brand almost certainly publishes a where to buy page, and getting added is one email to a rep who already knows your account.
Our guides to link outreach and manual link building cover the rest.
Doing the contact work
Working through the brands you stock, the trade associations, the property managers and the neighbourhood groups, finding a named contact at each and asking to be listed is a finite job that pays for years.
MentionAgent runs it. It finds the relevant sites, pulls a contact, drafts and sends the pitch from your own domain, and replies come back to your inbox. The Domain Rating figures on this page come from the same research step it runs first.
Do the specialist category pages and the services pages first, because in this category those are what let you rank at all. Our link building checklist covers what follows.
Frequently asked questions
Why do hardware store searches vary so much by city?
Because of how many chain and buying group pages rank. Measured on 7 September 2026, median Domain Rating was 27 in Dallas, 55 in Phoenix, 81 in Denver and 83 in Atlanta. Atlanta gave seven of nine slots to chains and directories; Dallas gave four of nine. The independents are similar in all four.
Can an independent store rank on page one?
Yes, on the right words. In Dallas five of nine slots were independents, with a decorative hardware store at DR 2 in second place above Ace at DR 83. In Phoenix an industrial hardware supplier at DR 0.2 took position two.
What should an independent target instead of the generic term?
Specialist categories. Decorative, architectural, fine, builders and industrial hardware all appeared in our data, and none of them is targeted by a chain location page. Add cabinet hardware, door hardware, period and restoration hardware, fasteners, and keys and locks.
Does my Ace or True Value listing hurt me?
It competes with you on generic searches, since the group domain runs DR 78 to 83. It also sends customers and can be a strong relevant link. Check that the page actually links to your website and that the hours, phone and address match yours exactly, because mismatches cause local ranking problems.
Which services pages are worth building?
Key cutting, glass and screen repair, blade and tool sharpening, paint mixing and colour matching, pipe threading, hose and chain by the foot, propane exchange, small engine repair, equipment hire and delivery. Each is its own local search with almost no competition, because chain location pages do not list them individually.
Where do hardware store links come from?
The brands you stock are the most reliable, since most publish a where to buy or dealer locator page and adding you is one email to your rep. Then contractor and trade associations, property managers listing suppliers, neighbourhood business groups, preservation societies for period hardware, and local press.
