Free ChatGPT Rank Tracker
Ask the prompt in a Temporary Chat (choose Unpersonalized), then copy the answer with the copy button under it. That copy keeps the list formatting.
Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, paste each answer above, and the tracker shows your spot in ChatGPT's list and who sits above you. Repeat the same prompts weekly and read the trend.
Free: no signup, and nothing you paste leaves your browser.
When ChatGPT named a brand we track, it put it first 30% of the time and named it only in passing 27% of the time. Its lists held a median of 5 options.
Across four runs: a brand named at least once was named all four times on only 21% of questions, and just once on 46%.
ChatGPT answers to our customers' buyer questions, July to October 2026. Details.
How the tracker reads an answer
ChatGPT answers "best X" questions with a list. The tracker finds the list item that names your brand or domain and counts its spot among the items at the same level, so a "Free options" sub-list does not push you down. A brand named only in a sentence shows as "named in passing", not as a rank. The same parser runs our own AI visibility reports.
Why one check misleads
MentionAgent asks ChatGPT a fixed set of buyer questions for each brand it tracks, about every two weeks. On the questions where a brand was named in at least one of the last four runs:
| Named in the last 4 runs | Share of questions |
|---|---|
| 4 of 4 | 21% |
| 3 of 4 | 25% |
| 2 of 4 | 7% |
| 1 of 4 | 46% |
Nearly half the time, a brand named in one run was missing from the other three. And being named is not being recommended: of the answers that did name the brand, 30% put it first, 23% second or third, 21% fourth or lower, and 27% mentioned it only in passing. Check each prompt at least four times before you read a trend.
Method: ChatGPT answers to core, audience, pain-point and niche buyer questions from 8 July to October 2026, MentionAgent's own sales workspace excluded. Spots were read with the same parser this tracker uses. Shares are rounded.
Which prompts to track
- Category: "What are the best [category]?" The one most buyers start with.
- Use case: "Best [category] for [audience]". Narrower lists, easier to get into.
- Rival: "Alternatives to [competitor]". Who ChatGPT offers when someone leaves a rival.
Keep the wording fixed. A changed word is a new question, and its history starts again. More prompt ideas: prompts to test AI visibility.
When a paid tracker is worth it
Pasting answers works for a handful of prompts checked weekly. Paid trackers run the prompts for you every day, across several assistants, and chart the result. We compared them, with prices, in LLM tracking tools.
Want ChatGPT to name you more often?
MentionAgent finds the articles that rank for your category, writes to their authors, and asks for a mention. You approve each email before it goes.

Is it free, and where does my data go?
Free, with no signup. The answer you paste is read in your browser and is not sent to our server. Your history is saved in this browser only, so clearing site data removes it. Download it as CSV to keep a copy.
Why does my rank change between checks?
ChatGPT does not give the same answer every time, even to the same question. Track a few fixed prompts and read the trend across runs, not one answer.
Does everyone see the same ChatGPT answer?
No. A logged-in ChatGPT can use your memories and custom instructions. For a check closer to what a new customer sees, start a Temporary Chat and choose Unpersonalized, which OpenAI says "does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins."
Does it work for Gemini, Claude or Perplexity?
Yes. It reads the list in any pasted answer the same way, so you can paste answers from other assistants too. Label the prompt with the assistant's name to keep their histories apart.
