Awning Company SEO

September 2026 · Four metro searches measured against a calibration set of eleven larger trades

Our data

Awning installation in Atlanta returned a median Domain Rating of 6, the softest local trade page one in our September 2026 run. Six of its ten results sat below DR 8.

Across four metros: medians of 6 in Atlanta, 17 in Dallas, 25 in Denver and 35 in Phoenix.

Against larger trades: roofing measured 49, HVAC 63, plumbing 74 and restaurants 85 on the equivalent search.

All Domain Ratings pulled 7 September 2026, United States, English.

Quick answer

Nothing in this trade is defended by a heavy domain. The ceiling is set by two national shade brands with city pages and by Yelp, and both are beatable with real project photography and honest prices.

Position one in Atlanta and Dallas: DR 0.6 and DR 0.5 respectively.

The recurring national names: marygrove.com at DR 53 and sunairawnings.com at DR 52.

Why nobody has taken this trade

Every trade has a group of agencies, software vendors and national publishers writing about it. The size of that group tracks the size of the trade, and awnings sit at the small end of it. The result is a set of searches that almost nobody has bothered to defend.

On 7 September 2026 we ran four awning searches in four metros, took the organic results and pulled a real Ahrefs Domain Rating for each domain:

SearchResultsMedian DRResults under DR 10DR at position one
awning installation atlanta10650.6
awning company dallas101740.5
retractable awnings denver825229
awnings phoenix103523.4

In three of the four cities the site holding first place is under DR 4. Those are not strong websites. They are local installers with a domain, some project photographs and a phone number, and they are outranking companies many times their size.

A metro page one with a median of 6

Atlanta is worth walking through in full, because it is the softest local trade result we have recorded:

#DomainDRWhat it is
1atlantaawning.com0.6Local installer, Norcross
2peachtreeawnings.com7Local installer, Lawrenceville
3m.yelp.com94Directory listicle
4awningsatlanta.com0Commercial and industrial installer
5awningbuilders.com0Georgia awnings and canopies
6softekawnings.com4.5Local installer
7thumbtack.com90Lead marketplace
8marygrove.com53National brand, Atlanta city page
9southeastawnings.com1.7Metro installer
10peachtreeblinds.com14Blinds company with an awning page

Two sites at DR 0 are holding positions four and five. A site at DR 1.7 is at position nine. The only domains above DR 50 are a directory, a lead marketplace and one national brand, and none of them are in the top two.

What this means in practice is that the ranking factors deciding these positions are not link based. They are relevance, location signals and whether the page actually looks like an awning company that serves that metro.

Measured against eleven larger trades

To put a number on how unusual this is, we ran the equivalent trade search for eleven other trades in the same session and recorded the median Domain Rating of each result set:

TradeMedian DR of the trade search
Awning company33
Roofing49
Contractor55
Landscaping56
Salon57
HVAC63
Auto repair63
Electrician64
Pest control65
Cleaning company68
Plumber74
Restaurant85

The gap between awnings at 33 and plumbing at 74 is not a difference of degree. It is the difference between a market where an ordinary page can rank and one where you are bidding against agencies with a decade of published work behind them.

The mechanism is straightforward. A plumber search is worth defending to a dozen national marketing companies, so a dozen national marketing companies defend it. Nobody has built a business writing about awnings.

The two national names you will keep meeting

Two domains appeared in more than one of our four metros. marygrove.com at DR 53 held a slot in Dallas and Atlanta, and sunairawnings.com at DR 52 held one in Phoenix and Denver. Both are manufacturers running a city page for each market they sell into.

Those pages are the realistic ceiling for a local installer, and they are beatable. A national brand city page can describe a product line, but it cannot show a job completed on a specific street in that metro, name the fabric that survives that climate, or quote a local price. It is a template with a city name inserted, and it reads like one.

This is the same weakness a local operator can exploit in any trade where a manufacturer sells nationally through installers. The manufacturer wins on domain strength and loses on specificity, and specificity is the cheaper of the two to produce.

Yelp, Houzz and Thumbtack take about one slot in four

Across the 38 awning results we measured, nine were a directory, a lead marketplace or a social profile. Yelp appeared in all four metros. Houzz, Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor, Facebook and Reddit took one slot each.

That share is higher than the shooting range category we measured in the same run and lower than most home services. Awnings sit in an awkward middle: expensive enough that people want quotes, specific enough that they also want to see the work.

The practical consequence is that you are competing for roughly seven of ten organic slots rather than all ten, and that a listing on the marketplaces holding the other three is worth having on its own terms. Our guide to citation building packages covers what that layer costs and what it does.

Commercial and residential are two different searches

Look again at the Atlanta table. Position four calls itself commercial and industrial. Position one is a residential and commercial firm in Norcross. Position ten is a blinds company that added an awning page. These are three different businesses being returned for one query.

That tells you the search intent is unresolved, which is an opportunity. Splitting your site into a residential patio and deck awning page and a separate commercial storefront and canopy page lets each one match a narrower query cleanly, instead of one page trying to speak to a homeowner and a facilities manager at the same time.

The commercial side is usually the neglected half and the more valuable one. A restaurant replacing a storefront canopy is a larger job than a patio awning, and the search volume behind it is smaller and less contested for exactly that reason.

Photographs and real prices carry this trade

Awnings are bought visually. The customer has a specific opening in mind and wants to see something close to it before they call. A gallery of your own installations, sorted by type and with the metro named, is doing more work here than any amount of written description.

The second half is price. Most awning sites publish nothing, which leaves every visitor arriving at a contact form with their main question unanswered. Ranges rather than fixed figures are fine, with the factors that move them: width, motorised or manual, fabric grade, wind rating, whether the wall needs reinforcing.

A page with real numbers is also the kind of page other sites reference, which is how a trade site without a marketing budget picks up links at all. We built our own backlink pricing guide on the same principle, using quotes we collected rather than estimates.

The sources here follow the supply chain and the job site. Fabric and hardware manufacturers with dealer or installer locators. Retractable awning brands whose products you fit. Trade bodies for canvas, shade and tent work. Local business associations. Architects, patio builders, pool companies and restaurant fit-out firms you subcontract with. Home improvement and outdoor living publications covering shade.

Dealer locators are the highest yield and the most commonly forgotten. If you install a brand, that brand almost certainly has a page listing where its products can be bought, and getting your company added is one email to a distributor who already knows your name.

Beyond that it is regional publishers and home improvement sites, which is cold contact work. Our guides to link outreach and manual link building cover how that runs when there is no existing relationship to lean on.

Doing the contact work

Finding the manufacturers, associations, regional publications and outdoor living sites worth contacting, getting to a named person at each, and writing something worth answering is the slow half of this job.

MentionAgent does that part. It finds the relevant sites, pulls a contact, writes and sends the pitch from your own domain, and the replies arrive in your inbox. The Domain Rating figures in the tables on this page come from the same research step it runs before contacting anything.

Given how soft these searches are, links are not where a local awning company should start. Build the gallery and the price ranges first, because in a market with a median of 6 the pages themselves are usually enough. Our link building checklist covers the order of operations once you are ready.

Frequently asked questions

How competitive is awning company SEO?

It is the least defended trade we measured. Across four metro searches on 7 September 2026 the median Domain Rating was 6 in Atlanta, 17 in Dallas, 25 in Denver and 35 in Phoenix. In three of those cities the site in first place was under DR 4.

How does it compare with other trades?

The awning trade search measured a median Domain Rating of 33 against roofing at 49, HVAC at 63, plumbing at 74 and restaurants at 85 in the same session. Nobody has built a marketing business around awnings, so nobody has defended the searches.

Can a brand new awning site rank?

Two sites at DR 0 held positions four and five on the Atlanta page one, and a site at DR 1.7 held position nine. Link authority is not what decides these results. Relevance, location signals and whether the page looks like a real installer serving that metro are.

Who are the strongest competitors?

Two national manufacturers running city pages: marygrove.com at DR 53 appeared in Dallas and Atlanta, sunairawnings.com at DR 52 in Phoenix and Denver. Both are beatable locally because a templated city page cannot show a job on a specific street, name the fabric that survives that climate, or quote a local price.

Do directories take much of the page?

About one slot in four. Of 38 results across four metros, nine were a directory, lead marketplace or social profile. Yelp appeared in all four cities, with Houzz, Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor, Facebook and Reddit taking one slot each. That leaves roughly seven of ten slots available to installers.

What links can an awning company get?

Dealer and installer locators run by the fabric and hardware brands you fit are the highest yield and the most often forgotten, because a distributor who already knows your name can add you. Beyond that: canvas and shade trade bodies, local business associations, and the architects, pool companies and restaurant fit-out firms you subcontract with.
