How Much Do Backlinks Cost?

July 2026 · Link Building

Ask five providers what a backlink costs and you will get answers spanning more than an order of magnitude, all for something that looks identical in a report: an anchor, a URL, a page. The spread is real, and it is not arbitrary. It tracks how the placement was obtained.

Every price below is one we have already published on a vendor page and linked back to, rather than a market estimate. Rates move, so check each provider before budgeting.

The short version

  • Per placement: from about $45 at the entry tier to $1,500 and up for real publications. The mid-market sits at $177 to $600.
  • Per month: managed retainers from ~$2,500. Digital PR retainers $3,000 to $15,000.
  • The part that matters: per-placement pricing is linear forever. Ten links a month costs ten times one link a month, permanently.

Backlink prices by source

Cheap marketplaces$5 to $50Spam and networks, no value
Mid-tier link vendors$100 to $300Low authority, often off-topic

High-authority placements$1,500 to $5,000+DA 70+, real publications

Those bands are the market shape. The named rates below are more useful, because they are attached to providers you can check.

Why the same link costs $45 and $600

The honest answer is that they are not the same link, and the difference is invisible in a backlink report.

A $45 placement is cheap because the host site is cheap to place on. That usually means a site whose business is selling placements, with a passable authority score and negligible organic traffic behind it. You are buying the score. A $600 placement is priced on the labour of pitching a site that was never selling anything, where most pitches fail and the failures are in the price.

That gives you a better test than any price band: ask what the host page's organic traffic is, and whether it publishes on your topic. Authority scores can look fine while actual traffic is negligible, which is the single most important caveat about entry-tier placements. Relevant backlinks covers the qualification criteria in full.

The four pricing models, and which one stops scaling

ModelShape of the costWhere it breaks
Per placementLinear. 10 links cost 10x 1 linkNever gets cheaper. At volume this is the whole problem
Managed retainerFixed monthly, variable outputA $2,500 retainer producing 4 links is a $625 link
PackageVolume discount on placementsStill linear, just a lower slope
Flat softwareFixed, output limited by your approval timeYou keep the judgement work

At ten links a month, roughly $45 to $100 per link is $450 to $1,000, and that price never drops as you scale. That is the structural argument against per-placement buying, separate from any argument about quality. Outsource link building compares all four models side by side.

The cost nobody quotes: your own time

Doing it yourself has a cash cost near zero and a real cost that most people never calculate. Budget 20 to 40 minutes per prospect across research, qualification, contact lookup, writing and follow-up. Most prospects never reply, and only some replies become links, so each earned link carries several hours behind it.

For a founder billing their own time at anything meaningful, hand-running every step is usually the most expensive acquisition method available. Manual link building works through where that time actually goes and which steps are mechanical enough to hand off.

Cost per link is the wrong number

Per-link price is easy to compare and tells you very little, because a link is an input and you are buying an outcome. The number worth building is cost per result: what a ranking position on a given query is worth to you monthly, against the total campaign cost.

Our backlink ROI calculator does that arithmetic. It changes decisions more often than a price table does, because a $600 link into a page that converts can be cheap and a $45 link into a page nobody searches for is expensive at any price.

On the policy side: paid placements violate Google's spam policies and the risk sits on your domain rather than the vendor's. Should you buy backlinks? covers that trade-off in full.

Test yourself

Why is a $45 entry-tier placement not automatically a good deal?

🎉

Correct! Price tracks how hard the placement was to get. A site that is cheap to place on is usually one whose business is placements, and the authority score can look fine while real traffic is close to zero.

💡

The issue is not the price itself but what the price implies about the host site: low placement cost usually means low traffic behind a passable score.

Test yourself

A $2,500 monthly retainer produces four placements. What is the real per-link cost?

🎉

Correct! Retainers hide the per-link number, and it is the one that makes the quote comparable. $625 is defensible for a genuinely earned editorial placement and poor for something ordered from a catalogue.

💡

Divide the retainer by the placements it produced. That gives you the number that can be compared against per-link pricing.

No per-link fee at all

MentionAgent runs the outreach workflow instead of selling placements: finding blogs on your topic, qualifying them, looking up the right contact, writing a pitch that references their specific post, and following up. You approve every send. Flat $99/mo, and the cost does not rise with the number of links you earn.

Frequently asked questions

How much do backlinks cost in 2026?

Published rates run from around $45 for an entry-tier productized placement to $1,500 and above for high-authority publications, with the mid-market between $177 and $600. Managed outreach retainers start around $2,500 a month. Outreach software that runs the same workflow is a flat fee with no per-link charge.

Why does the same backlink cost $45 from one vendor and $600 from another?

Because they are not the same link. A $45 placement is cheap because the host site is cheap to place on, usually meaning low organic traffic behind a passable score. A $600 placement is priced on the labour of pitching a site that was never selling links, including the pitches that failed.

How much does link building cost per month?

Managed agency retainers start around $2,500. Per-link packages start around $697 at the mid-market end. Digital PR retainers typically run $3,000 to $15,000. Outreach software that automates prospecting, contact lookup, writing and follow-up runs a flat fee, in our case $99 with no per-link charge.

What is a fair price for a backlink?

Judge it on the traffic and topical fit of the host page rather than the authority score. A link from a site with real organic traffic on your topic is worth several hundred dollars. A link from a high-scoring site with negligible traffic is not worth $45, because the score is the only thing you are buying.

Is buying backlinks worth the cost?

Paid placements violate Google's spam policies and the risk sits on your domain, not the vendor's. Beyond that there is a structural issue: per-placement pricing is linear forever, so ten links a month costs ten times one link a month, permanently. Earned links have the opposite shape.

How much does it cost to build links yourself?

The cash cost is near zero, but budget 20 to 40 minutes per prospect across research, qualification, contact lookup, writing and follow-up, and most prospects never become links. At realistic reply-to-link rates that puts several hours behind each earned link.

How many backlinks do I need and what will that cost?

There is no universal number, because it depends on what the pages you want to outrank already have. Work out per-result cost instead: what a ranking position is worth to you monthly, against total campaign cost rather than the sticker price of one link.

Why do link building prices vary so much between agencies?

Mostly because of the acquisition method behind the quote. A marketplace resale has a wholesale cost and a margin. Managed outreach has a labour cost that scales with how many pitches fail. Ask what share of last month's placements was paid for, and the differences usually explain themselves.
