Sign Company SEO
Sign company searches in Dallas and Atlanta returned median Domain Ratings of 5 and 12 in September 2026. Ten of the twenty results in those two cities sat below DR 10.
Every metro carries a franchise: FastSigns at DR 74 appeared in all four cities.
It never held first place in Dallas or Atlanta, where independents at DR 2 and DR 34 did.
Domain Ratings pulled 7 September 2026, United States, English.
Assume one or two page one slots belong to a franchise network and compete for the remaining eight. In Dallas the independents holding them run DR 2, 3.6, 11, 2.4, 0.2, 0 and 7.
The franchise networks: FastSigns 74, AlphaGraphics 72, Signarama 66, Signs By Tomorrow 55.
Phrasing changes everything: custom signs in Phoenix returned a median of 69, sign company in Dallas returned 5.
Four metros, measured
On 7 September 2026 we ran a sign company search in four large metros and pulled a real Ahrefs Domain Rating for every organic result. Forty results in total:
| Search | Results | Median DR | Franchise slots | DR at position one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| sign company dallas | 10 | 5 | 2 | 2 |
| sign company atlanta | 10 | 12 | 1 | 34 |
| business signs denver | 10 | 30 | 3 | 74 |
| custom signs phoenix | 10 | 69 | 4 | 74 |
The pattern is clean and it runs left to right: the more franchise locations rank in a city, the higher the median. In Dallas two franchise pages appear and the median is 5. In Phoenix four appear and the median is 69.
This is a more useful model than a single difficulty score, because the franchise count is something you can check yourself in thirty seconds before deciding how much work a market is worth.
A metro page one with a median of 5
Dallas is worth reading in full:
| # | Domain | DR | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | dallas-signco.com | 2 | Independent sign shop |
| 2 | texasprosigns.com | 3.6 | Independent, no outsourcing angle |
| 3 | fastsigns.com | 74 | Franchise, Oak Lawn location |
| 4 | yelp.com | 94 | Directory listicle |
| 5 | dfwhightechsigns.com | 11 | Independent |
| 6 | giantsign.com | 2.4 | Custom sign manufacturer |
| 7 | hancocksign.com | 0.2 | Independent |
| 8 | tolsigns.com | 0 | Signs and graphics |
| 9 | barnettsigns.com | 7 | Independent |
| 10 | signarama.com | 66 | Franchise, downtown location |
Seven of the ten results are independents and six of those seven sit below DR 12. A shop at DR 0 holds position eight in the fourth largest metro in the United States.
Both franchise pages are on the page, and neither is at the top. Whatever is deciding these positions, it is not domain strength.
Treat the franchise slot as fixed and compete for the rest
Four franchise networks appeared across our four cities: fastsigns.com at DR 74 in all four, signarama.com at DR 66 in three, alphagraphics.com at DR 72 in Phoenix and signsbytomorrow.com at DR 55 in Denver.
These pages rank the same way a chain restaurant ranks: a strong national domain with a page per location. You are not going to outrank a DR 74 domain on a term as broad as your city plus the word signs, and there is no need to.
Assume one or two slots are theirs, then look at what is left. In Dallas that is eight slots contested by shops at DR 0 to 11. In Atlanta it is nine slots, and the strongest independent on the page is at DR 34. Those are the positions to plan for, and any of them will bring you work.
The phrasing moves the difficulty more than the city does
Compare the two extremes in our set. Sign company Dallas returned a median of 5. Custom signs Phoenix returned a median of 69. Those are the same business in two similar sized metros, and the difference is almost entirely in the words.
Custom signs pulls in the franchise networks, the print chains and the national suppliers, because it describes a product that can be sold online and shipped. Sign company pulls in local fabricators and installers, because it describes a business you visit and hire.
The practical consequence is to build your pages around the business phrasing and the installation work, not around the product words that put you in a national queue. Company, shop, installation, fabrication, repair and service are the words that keep the search local, and local is where you can win.
What comes up when a sign shop searches for help
The other side of this is the search a sign shop owner runs when looking for marketing advice. We measured that too, and it is unusual: a large publisher holds first place and the next three positions belong to sites with almost no authority at all.
| # | Domain | DR |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | webfx.com | 89 |
| 2 | garagetool.app | 3.9 |
| 3 | signshopmarketingpros.com | 0.7 |
| 4 | signcompanywebsites.com | 0.1 |
| 5 | flento.io | 13 |
Median across the page is 31. One heavy publisher at the top does not mean a search is closed, and this is a clean example: positions two, three and four belong to sites at DR 3.9, 0.7 and 0.1.
Build pages by sign type, not one services page
The sites winning these metro searches share a habit: they have a page for each thing they make. Channel letters, monument signs, pylon signs, wayfinding, ADA and braille, vehicle wraps, window graphics, banners, dimensional lettering, digital displays, awning signs, and sign repair and maintenance.
Each of those is a separate purchase with a separate buyer. A property manager needing wayfinding is not the same person as a restaurant owner needing a storefront sign, and one services page cannot speak to both.
Sign repair deserves particular attention, because it is urgent, recurring and almost nobody optimises for it. A business whose sign has gone dark searches for repair today and books today.
Remember who is actually buying
Almost every sign is bought by a business, which makes this one of the few local trades where the customer is doing a considered commercial purchase rather than an impulse one. They want to know about permits, lead times, installation, warranty and whether you handle the city paperwork.
Permits are the most underused topic in the trade. Sign codes vary by city and by district, they confuse everyone, and a page explaining the process in your specific municipality is genuinely useful, hard for a national franchise to write, and the kind of thing other local businesses link to.
Portfolio work matters as much. Photographs of installed signs, with the business named and the sign type labelled, do double duty: they show competence and they match the searches people type when they want something similar.
Links a sign shop can realistically get
The customers you have already served are the first source. A sign shop installs for restaurants, dentists, gyms, churches, schools and property developers, and many of those have a website with a page about their premises or their refurbishment. Asking for a credit is a short email to someone who already paid you.
Then: sign industry associations and trade bodies, material and equipment suppliers with fabricator locators, commercial property managers and developers with contractor lists, chambers of commerce, business improvement districts, and local construction directories.
Commercial construction directories are worth a look on their own. One appeared on the Denver page one at DR 45 listing signage contractors, which means a directory listing there is both a link and a route to being found. Our guide to link outreach covers approaching the ones with no existing relationship.
Doing the contact work
Working through past customers, suppliers, associations, property managers and construction directories, finding a named contact at each and writing something that gets answered is a straightforward job that almost never gets done, because it is nobody's role at a sign shop.
MentionAgent takes it on. It finds the relevant sites, pulls a contact, drafts and sends the pitch from your own domain, and replies come to your inbox. The Domain Rating figures on this page come from the same research step it runs before contacting anything.
In a market where the median page one runs DR 5, links are not the constraint. Build the pages by sign type, write the permit guide for your city, and photograph everything you install. Our link building checklist covers what comes after that.
Frequently asked questions
How competitive is sign company SEO?
Less than most trades. Sign company searches measured on 7 September 2026 returned median Domain Ratings of 5 in Dallas and 12 in Atlanta. Ten of the twenty results across those two cities sat below DR 10, and a shop at DR 0 held position eight in Dallas.
Can I outrank FastSigns or Signarama?
Not on a broad city term, and you do not need to. Those franchise pages rank on a strong national domain with a page per location. Assume one or two slots are theirs and compete for the remaining eight, which in Dallas are held by independents running DR 0 to 11.
Why is custom signs harder than sign company?
Because the words attract different competitors. Custom signs pulls in franchise networks, print chains and national suppliers, since it describes a product that ships. Sign company pulls in local fabricators and installers. In our measurements custom signs in Phoenix returned a median of 69 against 5 for sign company in Dallas.
What pages should a sign shop build?
One per sign type rather than a single services page. Channel letters, monument signs, pylon signs, wayfinding, ADA and braille, vehicle wraps, window graphics, banners, digital displays, and sign repair. Repair is the most neglected and the most urgent: a business whose sign has gone dark searches today and books today.
What content works for a sign company?
Permit guidance for your specific municipality. Sign codes vary by city and district, they confuse every buyer, and a national franchise cannot write a local one. Alongside that, photographs of installed work with the business named and the sign type labelled, which match what people actually search for.
Where do sign company backlinks come from?
Past customers first. You have installed signs for restaurants, dentists, gyms, churches and developers, many of whom have a page about their premises, and asking for a credit is a short email to someone who already paid you. Then trade associations, material suppliers with fabricator locators, property managers, chambers of commerce and construction directories.
