How to Get Featured in Inc. Magazine in 2026
Inc. writes about how companies are built, so the way in is a story about how yours grew and what another founder can learn from it, pitched to the Inc. writer who covers that theme. The other routes are contributing your own column and applying to the Inc. 5000. Here are the steps for each, from Inc.'s own help centre and list pages as of 23 September 2026.
Find the Inc. reporter or columnist whose theme matches your story, and pitch a founder lesson backed by your numbers. To write for Inc. yourself, email [email protected]. With $2M+ revenue and fast growth, apply to the Inc. 5000.
Best pitch shape: a turning point, an unusual way of running something, or growth with a reason.
Wrong pitch: a product announcement.
Not a pitch address: [email protected], which is Inc.'s own PR contact.
We checked every route into Inc. on its own pages on 23 September 2026. Three are open by application or pitch, and three are paid.
Open: reporters and columnists; [email protected]; the Inc. 5000, Regionals and Best Workplaces lists (fees apply to lists).
Paid: Inc. Leadership Forum (invitation-only membership), Inc. Verified listings, Inc. Founders House events.
inc.com blocked our checker on its contact and columnist pages; those are marked "could not check".
Step by step
- Pick your angle. Inc. readers run companies. Your pitch is a lesson from building yours, not news about your product.
- Check the Inc. 5000 first. If you meet the revenue bar, the list is the most predictable way into Inc., and honourees are a pool Inc. writers draw on.
- Find the writer. A staff reporter for news, or a columnist whose theme (hiring, leadership, fundraising, a specific industry) fits your story.
- Pitch with numbers, using the template below: the lesson, the before-and-after figures, and the founder available to talk.
- Follow up once after four or five working days, then try the next writer.
Finding the right Inc. writer
- Search Google for
site:inc.com "your theme", for examplesite:inc.com "first sales hire"orsite:inc.com "restaurant owners", and set Tools to the past year. - Note the bylines. Columnists come back to the same theme again and again; that repetition is what you are looking for.
- Read the writer's recent pieces and pick the one yours builds on. You will name it in your pitch.
- Find their contact details on their author page or social profiles.
Columnists are often the easier route. Many write about one theme every week and need real companies to illustrate it; a founder offering a concrete case study is useful to them. Inc. also has a press queries page on inc.com, which we could not read (inc.com returned access errors to our checker), so look at it in a browser.
The story Inc. wants
- A turning point: the decision, pivot or mistake that changed the company, with numbers before and after.
- An unusual way of doing something ordinary: how you hire, price, sell or run the business differently, and what happened.
- Growth with a reason: not just that revenue rose, but why, in a way another founder could copy.
- A founder story with a point: your background matters when it explains a choice the company made.
- What you see across your market: patterns in your customers that nobody else can see.
If your pitch would read the same in a product review, it is aimed at the wrong publication.
A pitch template for Inc.
Subject: How [Company] [result] by [the unusual thing you did]
Hi [Name],
Your column on [their recent piece] stuck with me, because we went through the same thing at [Company]. [One sentence: the problem, and the unusual decision you made.]
It worked: [the before-and-after numbers]. The part other founders could use is [the lesson in one sentence].
I'm happy to walk you through the details and share the numbers, and [a team member or customer] can speak to it too. We're [what the company does, how big, where].
Thanks,
[Name, role, phone]
The lesson leads, the company is the evidence. For more shapes, see our pitch templates; what to include in a media kit covers what to have ready when the writer says yes.
Writing for Inc. yourself
Inc.'s help centre answers "How can I contribute to Inc.?" with one line: reach out to [email protected]. Inc.com also hosts a columnist proposal form, which we could not read. Inc. publishes no word counts or pay rates on the pages we could reach.
Write the proposal like an editor would want to read it: the theme you would cover, why you are the person to cover it, and two or three specific article ideas. A proposal that is really a way to promote your company will not get past the first read.
The Inc. 5000: do you qualify?
The Inc. 5000 ranks the fastest-growing private US companies, and its rules are published. For the 2026 list:
| Requirement | What Inc. states |
|---|---|
| Revenue history | Revenue generated by 31 March 2022 |
| Starting revenue | At least $100,000 in 2022 |
| Recent revenue | At least $2 million in 2025 |
| Company type | Privately held, for-profit, US-based and independent |
| Verification | Revenue must be verified; Inc. can exclude companies at its editorial discretion |
| Fee | A processing fee with an early-rate discount, non-refundable; the amount is not shown on the pages we read |
The 2026 cycle ran from a preferred-rate deadline of 20 March to an extended deadline of 1 May, with notifications in late June and the list in mid-August; the top 500 appear in the magazine. 2026 is closed. Inc. has a sign-up page for 2027 notifications, so if you qualify, sign up now and have verified revenue figures ready before the early deadline.
Regionals and Best Workplaces
- Inc. Regionals are open to companies with at least $1 million in 2024 revenue, a lower bar than the national list.
- Best Workplaces is a company application followed by an employee survey run by Quantum Workplace. Extra categories cost extra. Inc. listed the 2026 deadlines inconsistently on two help pages and both have passed, so check the next cycle's dates directly.
The paid programmes
- Inc. Leadership Forum (formerly Inc. Masters) is an invitation-only, paid membership for Inc. honourees that includes publishing rights on Inc.com. The fee is not published.
- Inc. Verified is a set of paid listings.
- Inc. Founders House is an event series (Austin during SXSW and Los Angeles in 2026), not a publishing route.
Firms also sell "guaranteed" Inc. features; one held two of the top ten Google results for this question when we checked. We could not find an Inc. rule on contributors taking payment on the pages we could read, so we make no claim either way. The Forbes and Entrepreneur guides quote those publications' rules.
Before you pitch Inc.
Founders often assume their industry decides whether anyone will cover them. In MentionAgent's outreach records it mattered less than the offer: across 18,849 blogs and niche sites pitched for customers between March and September 2026, the yes rate sat between 2.1% and 3.3% for every kind of brand but one. What moved it was usefulness: a free browser extension did best, at 3.9%. Editors at every level ask the same question: is this useful to my readers?
Those niche mentions also build the track record an Inc. writer looks for when they search your name, and they are what MentionAgent automates. For other outlets, see TechCrunch and Business Insider, or the overview, how to get featured in the news. Building a media list covers keeping track of the writers you find.
