Anchor Text Generator
Results appear as you type. Runs in your browser, nothing is sent anywhere.
Homepage link: use your brand name. Inner page: use a short phrase describing that page, varied across links. Keep anchors to four words or fewer.
On links MentionAgent confirmed live, 88.1% of homepage anchors were the brand name, 58.8% of inner-page anchors were a topical phrase, and none were "click here".
Need the links, not just the anchors?
MentionAgent finds pages that should link to you, writes the sentence and the anchor for each one, and sends the request. Anchors are capped at five words and varied across your profile.
Start Getting Mentioned On AutopilotWhich anchors editors actually publish
MentionAgent's placement verifier records the anchor of each link it confirms on a live page. Split by where the link points:
| Anchor type | Links to a homepage | Links to an inner page |
|---|---|---|
| Brand name (Acme) | 88.1% | 31.4% |
| Topical phrase (link building tools) | 3.6% | 58.8% |
| Brand plus words (Acme's comparison) | 1.2% | 7.8% |
| URL or domain (acme.com) | 7.1% | 2.0% |
| Generic (click here, this post) | 0% | 0% |
About two thirds of the inner-page links point to MentionAgent's own guides, so read that column as mostly one site's sample. The tool's suggested mix follows these two columns.
Keep anchors short
Of the anchors editors published, 51.1% were one word, 20.0% two words, 17.8% three, 8.1% four and 3.0% five or more. Google's guidance on link text says "Good anchor text is descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant to the page that it's on and to the page it links to." Our own agent refuses any anchor over five words or 50 characters, so the tool drops longer ideas.
How to use the list
- Match the anchor to the page. Homepage: use the brand name. Inner page: use a topical phrase that describes that page, not your head keyword.
- Vary the topical wording. Google's spam policies list "links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases distributed on other sites" as link spam. Our agent keeps the customer's target phrase to at most half of their recent anchors.
- Put the anchor in the sentence you ask for. An editor cannot link words that are not in the copy. Our outreach email templates show where the proposed sentence goes, and the nofollow link checker confirms the link once it is live.
Frequently asked questions
What is an anchor text generator?
It suggests the words to use as the clickable text of a backlink. This one takes your brand, the page you want linked and what that page is about, and returns brand, topical, brand plus topic and URL anchors, with a suggested mix for the next ten links.
Should I use my keyword as the anchor every time?
No. Google's spam policies list links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases distributed on other sites as link spam. On the placements MentionAgent has verified, links to inner pages used a topical phrase 58.8% of the time and the brand name for most of the rest, and homepage links used the brand name 88.1% of the time.
How long should anchor text be?
Short. Of the anchors editors published on our verified placements, 51.1% were one word and 97.0% were four words or fewer. MentionAgent's own agent refuses any anchor over five words or 50 characters and falls back to the brand name.
Does this tool send my data anywhere?
No. The anchors are built in your browser from what you type. Nothing is fetched or stored.
