What Is a Brand Mention?
Definition
A brand mention is any reference to a company, product, or brand name on the web, whether or not it includes a hyperlink. A followed linked mention passes ranking value. A Google patent describes counting unlinked ones when scoring pages.
Do brand mentions help SEO?
Yes, but less directly than links. A followed linked mention is a backlink and passes ranking value. An unlinked mention can still count. Google's patent US8682892B1 (Navneet Panda and Vladimir Ofitserov, granted 25 March 2014) describes an "implied link" as "a reference to a target resource, e.g., a citation to the target resource" that carries no hyperlink, and uses implied links alongside ordinary links when scoring resources (pages).
Google has never said how much weight unlinked mentions get today. Treat them as a supporting signal and turn the best ones into links.
Linked vs. unlinked mentions
| Type | Example | SEO value |
|---|---|---|
| Linked mention | "We recommend MentionAgent for outreach" | Passes link equity if followed. The stronger signal. |
| Unlinked mention | "We recommend MentionAgent for outreach" (no link) | Can count as an "implied link" (Google patent US8682892B1) |
The implied links patent is the source for the unlinked row. The patent counts such references but does not say they equal a dofollow link.
A blogger writes "I've been using MentionAgent for my outreach" but doesn't link to the website. What is this?
Right. This is an unlinked brand mention. Google's implied links patent counts references like this, and an email to the author can turn it into a backlink.
This is an unlinked brand mention, a reference to a brand without a hyperlink. It's not a backlink, but Google's implied links patent can still count it.
Why brand mentions matter
- They build brand awareness. Each mention can put your name in front of readers who have not heard of you, even without a link. Digital PR campaigns built on syndicated research are one common way to earn them in volume.
- They're link building opportunities. Unlinked mentions can be converted into backlinks by asking the author to add a link.
- They feed AI search. AI assistants answer from the pages they read, so a brand those pages name is easier to recommend. The GEO playbook explains how each engine picks sources, with deep-dives for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. The free AI Mention Checker looks at Wikipedia, Hacker News, GitHub and PageRank. It does not ask the assistants themselves.

Do unlinked brand mentions help SEO?
Some. Google's implied links patent (US8682892B1) counts references without a hyperlink alongside ordinary links. Google has not said how much they weigh today, and in our view a real backlink is worth more.
Each one is also a chance to ask the author for a link.
How do I find unlinked mentions of my brand?
Set up Google Alerts for your brand name, and search Google for your brand name with a -site:yourdomain.com operator. Ahrefs and Semrush both offer mention alerts (checked October 2026). Our guide to finding and converting unlinked brand mentions walks through each method and the outreach email that turns a mention into a link.
Should I ask people to add a link when they mention my brand?
Yes. The author already knows your brand and chose to write about it, so a short, polite email asking for a link is a small request.
Does being mentioned in ChatGPT or Gemini answers matter?
It does if your buyers use them. To see whether you are named, ask ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the questions your buyers ask. Our guide on checking if ChatGPT mentions your brand walks through it.
