9 Best AI SEO Tools for Solo Founders (2026 Prices Checked)
A solo founder has a different problem from an SEO team. The team is short of insight; you are short of hours. So the question for every tool on this list is not "what can it see" but "how much of the week does it hand back", and whether the price fits a company whose whole marketing budget might be $150 a month.
Nine tools clear that bar in 2026. Every price below was read from the vendor's own pricing page on 20 September 2026 (a few show EU prices in euros because that is what the page served us), and the numbers in the data card come from MentionAgent's own billing and outreach records, not from a survey.
Two tools do most of the work: Claude Code with an SEO skill for research, audits and briefs, and MentionAgent for link building outreach. The rest fill single gaps and most have a free tier.
$0 stack: Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs Free, Koala free tier, Claude free plan.
About $50: Claude Pro ($20) plus Koala Starter ($25) or Otterly Lite ($29).
About $150: Claude Pro plus MentionAgent ($99) plus Koala Starter.
Prices checked 20 September 2026 and they decay. Verify before you buy.
Our customer is a one-person, one-site operator. Of 26 paying MentionAgent accounts that set up a site, 25 run exactly one. The 22 of them that have sent mail look like this:
Signup to first send: median 1.1 days. 11 of 22 sent inside 24 hours, 18 inside a week.
First 30 days, median per site: 30 agent runs, 212 qualified prospects, 82 emails sent, 12 inbound threads.
Spread: the quiet quarter sent 45 emails in month one, the busy quarter 425.
Inbound threads count every reply, including autoresponders. Pulled 20 September 2026.
What being solo changes about the shortlist
Most "best AI SEO tools" lists are written for agencies and score tools on feature count. Feature count is the wrong axis for one person. A tool that shows you forty things to fix has given you forty jobs. A tool that fixes eight of them and drafts the other thirty-two has given you an afternoon.
So three filters were applied before anything made this list. First, the tool has to do work, not just report it: draft the page, run the audit against your files, send the email. Second, the entry price has to sit under $100 a month, or have a free tier that is genuinely usable rather than a demo. Third, it has to be run by one person without a setup project. That last filter removed the enterprise suites, and it is also why the general-purpose model plus a skill beats several single-purpose SaaS tools this year: the setup is a file in a folder. The filters are about SEO only: for AI tools across the rest of marketing, from email to social, DailyAITools keeps a broader list of AI tools for marketers.
One more thing that changes when you are solo: the cost of a tool is not the subscription, it is the subscription plus the hours it asks for. That is why the two tools at the top are the two that run unattended. If you want the longer argument for agents over dashboards, it is in what an autonomous SEO agent can and cannot run without you. If the hours you are short of are on the website side of SEO rather than the content, FallingBrick offers freelance web design and development, including WordPress builds, SEO support and ongoing maintenance.

1. Claude Code with an SEO skill
Price: Claude Free at $0; Claude Pro at $20 a month billed monthly or $17 billed yearly, with Claude Code included. Checked on claude.com on 20 September 2026. The skills themselves are free files.
This is the biggest change to a solo founder's SEO stack since Search Console. A skill is a folder of instructions that teaches the model a job; installed in Claude Code, it runs that job against your actual site files rather than a pasted URL. The free audit skills on GitHub crawl your pages, flag titles, headings, schema and internal linking, and write the fixes. A clustering skill turns a keyword export into page groups. A brief skill drafts the outline with the competing pages read. If you have not written one before, BriefIQ's guide to what goes into an SEO content brief is a useful checklist for reviewing what the skill produces.
For link building specifically, MentionAgent's Claude SEO skill connects Claude Code to our MCP server, so the same chat window that audited your page can review outreach drafts, approve a batch and answer publisher replies. There are matching wrappers for Cursor and OpenCode if that is where you already live.
Why it ranks first: one $20 subscription replaces the audit tool, the brief tool and the clustering tool, and it works on the repo you are already editing. Where it falls short: it has no index of its own. Keyword volumes and backlink data still have to come from Search Console, Ahrefs or a paid API, which is why tools 3 and 9 are on the list.
2. MentionAgent
Price: $99 a month flat for one site and one warmed inbox, with a free trial that drafts a real first batch. See the full pricing breakdown.
Link building is the SEO job a solo founder skips, because it is the one that cannot be done in an evening. Prospecting takes hours, contact lookup takes hours, the emails take hours, the follow-ups get forgotten, and the replies arrive while you are shipping. MentionAgent is an agent that owns the whole loop: it finds sites in your niche that are already linking to pages like yours, finds the right contact, writes a pitch that references something specific on their site, sends from a warmed inbox on your own domain, follows up, and handles the reply. You see a draft queue and approve it; nothing sends without that.
The data card at the top is the honest picture of what that means for a one-person company. Across the 22 paying one-site accounts that have sent mail, the median operator had their first email out 1.1 days after signing up, and in the first 30 days the agent ran 30 times, qualified 212 prospects, sent 82 emails and produced 12 inbound threads, all at the median. The spread is wide: the quietest quarter sent 45 emails in month one, the busiest 425, and the difference is mostly how often the operator approved the queue. Seven of those 22 sites currently have at least one conversation sitting in the link-placed state.
Why it ranks second: it is the only tool here that takes an entire job off the plate rather than a step of one. Where it falls short: it does nothing for on-page or content, and an agent that picks its own targets will sometimes pick a site you would not have. That is what the approval queue is for. For the wider category, the AI link building tools list compares it with the assisted and rewriting tools.
3. Ahrefs Free and Ahrefs Starter
Price: Ahrefs Free at $0 for sites you have verified; Starter at €27 a month on the EU price list served to us on 20 September 2026 (Lite is €119, Standard €229). Full tiers in our Ahrefs pricing guide.
The free plan is the part that matters for a solo founder. Verify your site and you get a site audit crawl, your own backlink profile and your organic keywords, refreshed on a schedule. That is the crawl and the link data that Claude Code cannot produce on its own, for nothing. Starter adds limited keyword and competitor lookups for the price of a lunch, which covers the "how big is this keyword" question a few dozen times a month.
The AI features live higher up: Standard includes 10 tracked AI prompts and Advanced 20, and Brand Radar AI starts at €179 a month. None of that is for a one-person company yet. Why it ranks third: the free tier is a real product. Where it falls short: everything it shows you is a task for you to do. Our Ahrefs review covers what the paid tiers add.
4. Koala AI
Price: 5,000 free words and 25 credits on every new account, no card; Starter $25 a month or $20 billed yearly for 45,000 words; Professional $49 for 100,000. Checked on koala.sh on 20 September 2026.
Koala is the cheapest way to get from a keyword to a first draft that has read the SERP. It pulls the competing pages, drafts with real-time data where the topic needs it, and publishes to WordPress if you let it. The output still needs an editor, and a solo founder should be that editor, because the pages that rank for a small site are the ones with something the big publishers did not have.
Why it is here: the free tier covers a couple of pages a month, and $25 covers a real content calendar. Where it falls short: it is a writer, not a strategist. Decide what to write with the tools above it, then hand Koala the keyword.
5. Frase
Price: Starter $49 a month or $39 billed yearly for one seat, one site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month; Professional $129 ($103 yearly). Checked on frase.io on 20 September 2026.
Frase sits between the brief tool and the writer. It reads the top results for a keyword, builds the outline, scores your draft against the SERP and, on the 2026 plans, adds a GEO score and an AI visibility check for ChatGPT and Google AI. The Content Guard feature watches 10 pages on Starter and tells you when a ranking page has started to slip, which is the kind of monitoring a solo operator never sets up by hand.
Why it is here: ten briefs plus ten scored drafts a month for $39 is the right size for one person. Where it falls short: if you already run Claude Code with a brief skill, Frase is paying twice for the outline; keep it for the scoring and monitoring or skip it.
6. Surfer
Price: the entry tier at €49 a month billed yearly, Standard €99, Pro €182, on the EU price list served to us on 20 September 2026. The AI Search Analytics plan is €82.
Surfer is the on-page optimiser most people have heard of, and the €49 entry tier is where a solo founder should stop. It gives you the content editor with guidelines derived from the pages already ranking, which is the fastest way to find out that the page you wrote at 900 words is competing against 2,400-word pages with a table. Standard adds the Surfy writing assistant, brand knowledge and 25 tracked AI prompts refreshed weekly; Pro adds one-click internal linking.
Why it is here: the editor is still the clearest picture of what a SERP expects from a page. Where it falls short: it overlaps almost entirely with Frase, so pick one, and the useful AI tracking starts at €99.
7. Otterly.ai
Price: Lite $29 a month or $25 billed yearly for 15 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot; Standard $189 for 100 prompts. Checked on otterly.ai on 20 September 2026.
By 2026 a share of your buyers ask an AI assistant before they search, and Otterly answers the one question about that which a solo founder actually needs answered: for the 15 prompts that describe what you sell, does the assistant name you, and who does it name instead? Fifteen prompts is enough for a single-product company. The GEO tools comparison covers the bigger platforms if you outgrow it.
Why it is here: it is the cheapest honest answer to "are we in the AI answers". Where it falls short: it reports, it does not fix. The fixing is content and mentions, which is the job of tools 1, 2 and 4. If you only want a one-off check, the free AI mention checker does that without an account, and how to get cited by ChatGPT explains what moves the answer.
8. SE Ranking
Price: Core from €87.20 a month billed yearly (€109 monthly), Growth from €188, with an AI Search add-on at €63.20 a month yearly. EU price list served to us on 20 September 2026.
SE Ranking is the answer if you want one login instead of five: rank tracking, a site audit, keyword research, a backlink checker and, on Core, 100 daily prompts for AI research across five models. It is the closest thing to the big suites at a price that a one-person company can defend, and its own agency tooling means it will still fit if you later hire help.
Why it is here: it replaces Ahrefs Starter, Otterly and a rank tracker in one bill. Where it falls short: at €87 it is the most expensive reporting tool on the list, and a founder who already runs Claude Code plus Search Console will find most of it duplicated.
9. Google Search Console (and Bing Webmaster Tools)
Price: free, and not AI. It is on the list because every AI tool above either reads it or would be better if it could.
Search Console is the only source that tells you which queries you already show up for, at what position, with what click rate. For a small site that is the whole keyword strategy: the queries sitting at position 8 to 20 are the pages to improve, and no third-party index sees them. Export the 28-day query report, hand it to Claude Code with the clustering skill, and you have a prioritised list without paying for a keyword database. Bing Webmaster Tools adds the same for Bing and, through it, the data behind Copilot answers.
Why it is here: it is the base layer. Where it falls short: it lags two to three days and it shows nothing about competitors. Our SaaS SEO checklist lists what to set up in it on day one, and the free on-page SEO checker covers the page-level basics it does not.
Three stacks, by budget
$0 a month
Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for the data, Ahrefs Free for the crawl and your backlink profile, the Claude free plan for keyword grouping and briefs, Koala's 5,000 free words for a first draft or two. This stack reports well and drafts a little. What it cannot do is outreach, and link building is the part of SEO that stays undone at $0.
About $50 a month
Claude Pro at $20 is the first dollar to spend, because Claude Code with an SEO skill does the audit, the clustering and the briefs against your real files. Add Koala Starter at $25 if you publish weekly, or Otterly Lite at $29 if you sell something people ask assistants about. Either way you land at $45 to $49.
About $150 a month
Claude Pro plus MentionAgent at $99 plus Koala Starter comes to $144. That is the first stack on this page that runs while you are not there: the agent prospects, writes, sends and follows up overnight, Claude turns the reply threads and the audit into a to-do list in the morning, Koala drafts the pages the outreach is pointing at. It is also the stack that the data card describes, because that is what our one-site customers run. For which outreach steps run unattended, see link building on autopilot.
What to skip until revenue says otherwise
Semrush Pro at $140 a month and Ahrefs Lite at €119. Both are excellent and both are agency-shaped. The price is not the only cost: they show a one-person company hundreds of tasks it cannot staff. Our Semrush pricing guide lays out the tiers if you want to see where the money goes. Upgrade when a single page earns enough that a keyword miss costs more than the subscription.
Anything called an AI backlink generator. The tools that promise free links in one click build profile and comment spam, the same sites that have been on "free backlink lists" since 2015. They are not what AI link building means, and the backlink builder software roundup shows the difference in detail.
Two tools for the same job. Frase and Surfer overlap, SE Ranking and Ahrefs Starter overlap, Otterly and the AI tracking inside Surfer Standard overlap. The cheapest stack is not the one with the fewest tools, it is the one with no duplicates. If you are also short of money for the SEO itself, low-cost SEO covers what is worth paying for at all.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest AI SEO stack for a solo founder?
Zero dollars gets you further than it used to: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for the data, Ahrefs Free for a crawl and your backlink profile, Koala's free 5,000 words for drafts, and the free Claude plan for keyword and brief work. The first paid dollar is best spent on Claude Pro at $20 a month, because Claude Code with an SEO skill replaces two or three single-purpose tools.
Do solo founders need Semrush or Ahrefs?
Not at the start. Semrush Pro is $140 a month and Ahrefs Lite is 119 euros a month on the EU price list, which is more than most one-person sites spend on SEO in total. Ahrefs Free covers the crawl and backlink checks, and Ahrefs Starter at 27 euros covers occasional keyword lookups. Upgrade when a page is earning enough that a keyword miss costs real money.
Which AI SEO tool builds backlinks for a one-person company?
MentionAgent at $99 a month flat. It finds sites in your niche, finds the contact, writes the pitch, sends it from a warmed inbox and handles replies, with a draft queue you approve before anything goes out. Across 22 paying one-site accounts the median operator sent their first email 1.1 days after signup and had 82 sends and 12 inbound threads in the first 30 days.
Is Claude Code an SEO tool?
On its own, no. With a skill installed it runs audits, keyword clustering, briefs and internal linking against your real site files, and with MentionAgent's skill it also runs link building outreach through the MCP server. Claude Pro is $20 a month billed monthly or $17 billed yearly, and the skills are free.
