Do Social Media Links Count as Backlinks? (And Do They Help SEO?)
Technically yes: a link in a social profile or post is a backlink. But YouTube, X, Facebook and Instagram route it through their own redirect and mark it nofollow, so Google generally doesn't follow it.
Still useful for: visitors, and people who may link to you later.
Your own site's links to your profiles: leave them followed.
We checked outbound links on YouTube, X, Facebook and Instagram on 8 October 2026. All four sent them through a redirect on the platform's own domain, and all four marked them nofollow.
Sold as extras: 18 publishers replying to MentionAgent offered social shares with a placement.
Method at the end.
Do social media links count as backlinks?
A backlink is any link from another site to yours, so a link in your Instagram bio or a YouTube description is one. The question that matters is whether they pass link value, and the nofollow attribute answers that: Google says links marked this way "will generally not be followed" (Google Search Central).
What each platform does with your link
| Platform | Where we checked | Link goes through | rel attribute |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Video description | youtube.com/redirect | nofollow |
| X | Profile bio | t.co | noopener noreferrer nofollow |
| Page | l.facebook.com | nofollow noreferrer | |
| Profile bio | l.instagram.com | me nofollow noopener noreferrer |
Two layers, then: the link points at the platform's own redirect, not at your site, and it carries nofollow. We couldn't check LinkedIn or Pinterest the same way, because their website links didn't render as plain links in the view we had. Run any page through our nofollow link checker to see for yourself.
Do social media links help SEO?
Not as ranking links. They can help indirectly: a post can put your article in front of people who later link to it from their own sites. That's the same route by which nofollow links help in general.

Should you pay for social shares with a placement?
Publishers offer it. Since June 2026, 18 sites replying to MentionAgent outreach mentioned sharing the post on social media:
- 5 sold it as a priced extra: three sites with an identical rate card at +$50, one at +£100 (£395 without shares, £495 with), and one at $200 per Instagram story frame.
- 11 included it in a paid post, from a $100 sponsored post to a £1,250 sponsored article.
- 2 offered it at no charge.
On the four platforms we checked, those shares would be nofollow links through a redirect: reach, not ranking value. And the paid post they come with is a paid link, which Google wants marked sponsored; see buying backlinks and what to do when a blogger asks for money.
Should links to your own social profiles be nofollow?
No. Google's John Mueller, asked about nofollowing links to your own profiles, said "Links to your own profile? Absolutely not," and suggested rel="me" instead (Search Engine Roundtable). For which links you give should be nofollow, see outbound links and affiliate links.

Do social media links help SEO?
Only indirectly. They bring visitors and can lead people to link to you from their own sites, and those editorial links are the ones that count.
Should links to my social profiles be nofollow?
