Do Backlinks Help Your Google Business Profile? (GMB Backlinks)

October 2026 · Link Building · By Matt

Quick answer

Point links at your website, not your Business Profile. Google says local prominence is based partly on "how many websites link to your business", and your profile links to your site.

Links to your Maps URL: Google's local ranking page doesn't mention them.

Bulk "GMB backlink" packages: automated links, which Google lists as link spam.

Our data

Of 200 businesses in Google Maps results for 20 US searches, 93% linked their own website from their profile. 3% linked a social page or Square site, 4% nothing.

What Google says about links and local ranking

Google's local ranking help says results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity". On prominence: "This factor's also based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have."

It doesn't say links to your profile's Maps URL count; that URL sits on Google's own domain. Relevance comes from complete, detailed profile info, and distance you can't change.

Google's link spam policy lists "using automated programs or services to create links to your site". Bulk packages of links to a Maps URL fit that description.

What the profiles that rank link to

We pulled Google Maps results for 20 US searches (a plumber in Denver, a dentist in Austin, a florist in Seattle and 17 more), 10 businesses each:

Nearly every business shown sends profile visitors to a site it owns. That site is where links from local press, suppliers and partners belong.

Backlinks vs citations

A citation is a mention of your business name, address and phone number, usually on a directory. A backlink is a link to your website. A listing can give you one, both or neither. See citation building packages and is directory link building worth it?

How to get links for a local business

  • Local press covering your openings, events or data (PR link building).
  • Suppliers, partners and associations with a stockist, partner or member page.
  • "Best [service] in [city]" articles that already rank (editorial link building).
  • Sponsorships, knowing Google expects paid links to carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow".

Get local and niche sites linking to you

MentionAgent finds real publishers in your niche, pitches the page that fits each article, and follows up with everyone who replies. From $99/mo.

Frequently asked questions

Do backlinks help my Google Business Profile rank?

Links to your business's website do: Google says prominence is based partly on how many websites link to your business. Point them at the site your profile links to.

Are free GMB backlink packages safe?

No. Google's spam policies list links created by automated programs or services as link spam.

Are citations the same as backlinks?

No. A citation mentions your name, address and phone number; a backlink links to your website.
