How Long Does Link Building Take to Work? (Our Timeline Data)
About three weeks to get a link live, days to weeks more before SEO tools count it, and months before your authority moves. Rankings come after that; we don't measure them.
Fastest step: the reply, usually within a day.
Slowest step: domain authority, measured in months.
In MentionAgent's outreach from July to September 2026, the median reply arrived 4.3 hours after the first email. The median link went live 19 days after it.
Slowest quarter of links: 40 days or more.
Method at the end.
How long link building takes, step by step
| Step | Typical time | Source |
|---|---|---|
| First reply | Median 4.3 hours | MentionAgent outreach |
| Link goes live | Median 19 days from the first email | MentionAgent outreach |
| Ahrefs finds the link | "a few days up to some weeks" | Ahrefs Help Center |

How fast publishers reply
Among replies to MentionAgent's outreach:
- 72% arrived within 24 hours of the first email.
- 86% arrived within 3 days.
- 7% took longer than a week.
Since only 7% of replies came after a week, a week of silence is the point to send one follow-up.
How long until a link is live
Most of the wait comes after the reply. The median link went live 19 days after the first email and 17 days after the first reply. A quarter went live within about 8 days, a quarter took 40 days or more, and the slowest took 76.
When SEO tools and your DR notice
A live link isn't counted until a crawler finds it. Ahrefs says "it can take a few days up to some weeks before we crawl your new backlink", and that pages with a higher URL Rating are more likely to be indexed and updated more often. Check a new link's attribute with our nofollow link checker; nofollowed links don't count toward DR at all.
Authority moves slower still. Among sites MentionAgent read twice 30 to 59 days apart, the median site was within a point of where it started. After 90 days or more, 52% of sites starting under DR 20 were up 3 points or more. The full breakdown is in how long it takes to increase domain authority.
When rankings move
We don't track rankings for the links we place, so we won't give you a number. A link can't help until Google has crawled the page it sits on. Plan in months, and judge a campaign by links landed and the gap to the sites above you, not week-to-week positions.
Keep links landing every week
MentionAgent finds real publishers in your niche, pitches the page that fits each article, and follows up with everyone who replies, so there is always a link in the pipeline. From $99/mo.

- Data: MentionAgent link-building outreach to sites first emailed 1 July to 30 September 2026. Our own sales outreach and customer-acquisition campaigns are excluded.
- Replies: the first human reply after the first email; auto-replies, bounces and out-of-office messages excluded.
- Live links: timed to the date the link was marked live, which can trail publication by a few days. The sample is small, so treat the quartiles as rough.
- DR: the DR sample is described on the domain authority timeline page.
