SEO for Credit Unions
We measured page one for both credit union SEO terms on 14 September 2026, then read our outreach records for how the 810 finance and money publishers we have prospected actually respond.
The term: editorial median DR 29. A .coop agency at DR 43 holds position one; a DR 2.2 blog and a DR 18 tool hold eight and nine. No agency above DR 47.
The publishers: 810 finance sites, median DR 52, 308 at DR 60 or above, 146 at DR 24 or below. 390 pitched, 47 replied (12.1%), 24 positive (6.2%), 12 sent a price.
The surcharge: finance runs 1.9x to 2.9x general on four rate cards. Thirty publishers refuse finance, loans, forex or trading.
No credit union sits among the 37,186 sites in our prospect records. The campaign data here is finance publishers, not a credit union client.
Credit union SEO is branch and product pages that read as local, member education content that earns citations, and links from finance publishers who, unusually, answer email. The term is open because bank agencies ignore it.
Lead with the branches. A Business Profile and a page per branch decide the "credit union near me" searches that bring members in.
Pitch finance publishers early. They reply at double the average rate, and a member-owned institution is an easy story for them.
Budget the finance surcharge for the sites that sell placements, and skip the 30 that refuse the niche.
Bank SEO, mortgage SEO and financial advisor SEO are agency terms with agency page ones: DR 55 to 80, retainers in the thousands, and no room for a new entrant. Credit unions search the same way banks do and buy marketing the way small institutions do, and the results page shows it. The strongest editorial result is DR 47. What makes the vertical worth a page, though, is not the term. It is the publisher set behind it: finance sites answered our outreach at twice the rate of anything else we track, and they have a rate card for it.
Who ranks for SEO for credit unions
We ran the query in the United States on 14 September 2026 and pulled the Ahrefs Domain Rating of every organic result.
| Position | Domain | DR | What the page is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | pixelspoke.coop | 43 | A credit union web agency's best-practices guide |
| 2 | marketvantage.com | 35 | An agency service page |
| 3 | eggtoapples.com | 23 | A digital marketing strategies article |
| 4 | linkedin.com | 99 | A post on local SEO for credit unions |
| 5 | yourmarketing.co | 47 | An SEO-to-AEO article for credit unions |
| 6 | missionbrandsconsulting.com | 15 | A consultancy's five-strategy article |
| 7 | nextleft.com | 36 | A credit union SEO agency page |
| 8 | oaktreebiz.com | 2.2 | A business blog's tips post |
| 9 | seosorted.app | 18 | A local SEO tool's landing page |
The editorial median is DR 29 and the strongest editorial result is DR 47. Four of the eight editorial slots are at DR 24 or below, including a DR 2.2 blog at position eight. Position one is a .coop domain, which is its own small tell: the agency that ranks first is one that chose the cooperative top-level domain, which says who it sells to before you read a word.
For scale, across the finance and professional-services SEO terms we measured the same afternoon, divorce attorney SEO had a median of 60, franchise SEO 66 and property management SEO 56. Twenty-nine is a different market.
Two terms, one page
The other phrasing, credit union SEO, returns a page with an editorial median of 39.5 and no result above DR 60 apart from LinkedIn. It shares six hosts with the page above: the .coop agency, marketvantage, yourmarketing, nextleft, oaktreebiz and the LinkedIn post. The additions are a DR 51 agency guide and a DR 55 Canadian credit union association's tips page.
Six shared hosts out of nine is the same results page in Google's eyes. One page written for the buyer, a credit union marketing manager, covers both terms; two pages would split what little volume there is (10 to 100 searches a month each in the US) and compete with each other. We apply the same overlap test before building anything, and the threshold is six.
Why credit unions are open when banks are not
Three reasons, all structural.
The buyers are small and local. A credit union is member-owned, usually serves one region or one employer group, and has a marketing team of one to three. That is not the client the DR 70 financial marketing agencies are built for, so they do not write for it.
The vendors are small too. Credit unions buy through their state leagues and a short list of specialist vendors, and those vendors are DR 15 to 47. The page one above is the whole vendor market, ranked.
The volume is small. Ten to a hundred searches a month is not worth a national agency's content calendar. It is worth one specialist's service page, which is why the specialists hold it.
The same pattern gave us esports SEO at a median DR 18 and functional medicine SEO at 11.5: a small buyer nobody large is chasing. The difference here is the publisher set, which is the rest of this page.
What credit union SEO actually covers
Branch pages and Business Profiles. "Credit union near me" and "[city] credit union" are decided by the map pack, and the map pack is decided by a verified profile per branch with hours, reviews and a matching page on the site. Most credit unions have one profile for the institution and none for the branches.
Product pages that name the product the way members search. Auto loan rates, HELOC, share certificates, youth accounts. Each with a rate that is current, because a stale rate page is a compliance problem before it is an SEO problem.
Membership eligibility. The page that explains who can join is the most-searched page on most credit union sites and the least written. Field of membership, employer groups, geographic rules, and the join button.
Member education content. First-time car buyer guides, budgeting for a wedding, credit score basics. This is the content finance publishers cite, and it is where a credit union earns the links that lift the branch and product pages.
Compliance in the copy. APY disclosures, NCUA insurance wording, Truth in Savings. The compliance officer reviews every page, so the SEO plan has to budget for that review or nothing ships.
Links from finance publishers. The part this page has data on, and the part most credit unions never do.
The finance publisher set
Our outreach system prospects sites for every customer. Of the 37,186 sites it has evaluated, 810 are finance, banking, money, investing, loan or budgeting sites, by domain or by the page it found, across 99 customer accounts. It has a Domain Rating for the whole set.
| Finance and money sites in our prospect records | Count |
|---|---|
| Sites found | 810, of which 751 qualified as targets |
| Median Domain Rating | 52 |
| DR 60 or above | 308 |
| DR 25 to 59 | 301 |
| DR 24 or below | 146 |
| Credit union sites among them | 0 |
Finance is a strong publisher set. A median of 52 and 308 sites at DR 60 or above means a credit union earning a mention on a mid-list personal finance site gets a link at DR 40 to 60, which is above every result on the page one it is trying to win. The 146 sites at DR 24 or below are the personal finance bloggers, and they are the easiest first placements.
How finance publishers reply to outreach
This is the number that makes the vertical unusual, and we have it from our own sends rather than from a survey.
| Outreach to finance and money sites | Finance set | Whole platform |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts pitched | 390 | 15,936 |
| Replied | 47 (12.1%) | 979 (6.1%) |
| Positive reply | 24 (6.2%) | 449 (2.8%) |
| Sent a price | 12 | 191 classified as a paid offer |
| Declined | 4 |
Finance publishers replied to 12.1% of pitches and were positive 6.2% of the time, against 6.1% and 2.8% across everything. Both figures are about double. Of the 47 replies, 12 came with a price, 5 were flagged as interested, 3 were counter-offers, 2 asked for details, 2 agreed, and only 4 declined.
The likely reason is that finance sites sell placements as a matter of course. A personal finance blog has a rate card the way a restaurant has a menu, so a pitch gets an answer, and the answer is often a number. That cuts both ways: the reply rate is high, but a good share of the yeses cost money. The prices those twelve quoted ran from $30 for a guest post at the bottom to a set at $550 for a link insertion, $550 for a brand mention and $700 for a guest post at the top, with $60 to $80 for a post or insertion and $150 to $300 for a standard placement in between.
The finance surcharge
Publishers who price by niche usually put finance in a premium tier. Seven publishers in our records put a price next to finance; four also quote a general price, which gives the multiple.
| Rate card | General price | Finance price | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|
| General blog, guest post | $80 | $150 (premium tier: CBD, steroids, finance, crypto) | 1.9x |
| Entertainment site, guest post | $65 | $150 (financial, crypto, forex) | 2.3x |
| Entertainment site, link insertion | $35 | $100 (finance) | 2.9x |
| Startup site, article with link | $550 | $1,200 (crypto, finance, forex tier) | 2.2x |
Call it 2x. It is the same tier legal and medical sit in on most cards, one below casino and adult. A credit union is the least risky thing a finance tier ever contains, and it is still charged as finance, because the rate card does not distinguish a federally insured cooperative from a forex affiliate. Saying which one you are in the first line of the pitch is the only lever, and it sometimes works.
Thirty publishers refuse finance outright, across 46 messages, usually with loans, forex and trading in the same sentence. Against 87 for casino, that is a modest exclusion rate, but it is worth filtering for before a send. The full picture of what a link costs across every niche, 175 first quotes with a median of $175, is in how much backlinks cost.
Our records, honestly
There is not one credit union among the 37,186 sites in our prospect records, and no credit union has run a campaign on the platform. So this page has no credit union case study, and any page that offers you one should be asked where the numbers came from.
What the records do hold is the other side of the transaction: 810 finance publishers, their Domain Ratings, 390 pitches, 47 replies, 24 positive, 12 prices and 4 refusals. A credit union pitching a finance publisher would be pitching the exact set above, and the set answers. That is what we can show, and we have labelled every number with the sample it came from.
Links a credit union can realistically get
The league and the trade bodies. State leagues, CUNA and the national bodies maintain member directories that link. Check every listing carries the right URL, and ask the league's communications team what they need for a member feature.
Employer partners and select groups. Every employer in the field of membership has an HR benefits page. A line and a link on it is a placement nobody else can get.
Local news and community sponsorships. A credit union sponsors youth sports, scholarships and financial literacy nights. Each has a page, and each page can link. Ask for the link, not the logo.
Schools and universities. Financial literacy programmes in schools and student accounts at colleges live on .edu domains, the strongest and least contested links on this list.
Personal finance bloggers. The 146 sites at DR 24 or below in our set. They cover credit unions versus banks as a standing topic, they reply, and their price, when there is one, is at the bottom of the range above.
Finance publishers at DR 40 to 60. The middle of the set, and the target for member education content. A guide to a first auto loan written by a credit union lender is exactly what they cite.
The volume of links matters less than most credit unions think. How many backlinks you need covers why a dozen relevant ones beat a hundred bought ones, and relevant backlinks covers why a DR 30 personal finance blog is worth more here than a DR 80 site with no finance readers.
The pages worth building, in order
A page per branch, matched to a verified Business Profile per branch.
Membership eligibility, written for a person who does not know what field of membership means.
Product pages with live rates, one per product, with the disclosures the compliance officer wants.
Rates page that updates the day the board sets rates.
Member education on a monthly cadence, each piece written or reviewed by a named lender or adviser, because that byline is what a finance publisher cites.
Community and sponsorship page listing what you fund, which is the page the sponsored organisations link back to.
Doing the outreach part without hiring anyone
The slow part is not writing the first-auto-loan guide. It is finding the 150 finance sites that would cite it, getting to a named editor at each, writing something a busy person answers, and handling the 12% who reply, some with a rate card, while running a three-person marketing team.
That is the job MentionAgent does. It finds the sites, pulls a contact, drafts a pitch tied to the specific article it found, and shows you the draft before anything sends from its own warmed-up inbox on its own domain. Replies, prices and refusals land in one inbox view, so the 30 who refuse finance sort themselves out of your list. The Domain Rating figures on this page come from the same research step it runs before it contacts anyone. The starter plan is $99 a month for one site and one inbox, with the ladder on the pricing page.
It will not build your branch pages or clear compliance, and those come first. Build the pages, then use the outreach to get the education content cited. The link building checklist is the order of operations, and outsource link building covers when a specialist vendor, like the ones on page one above, is the better fit.
Frequently asked questions
Who ranks for SEO for credit unions?
Measured 14 September 2026 in the United States: nine results with an editorial median Domain Rating of 29 and nothing above DR 47 except a LinkedIn post. A credit union web agency on a .coop domain at DR 43 holds position one, a DR 35 agency position two, a DR 23 consultancy position three, and a DR 2.2 business blog and a DR 18 local SEO tool sit at positions eight and nine. The sibling term credit union SEO shares six of those hosts, so one page covers both.
Why are credit union SEO terms so open?
The agencies that hold bank and fintech terms sell to national brands and do not write for a member-owned institution with six branches. Credit unions buy marketing through their leagues and a handful of specialist vendors, and those vendors are small: the strongest one on page one is DR 47. The searcher is a credit union marketing manager, and nobody large is competing for that reader.
Do finance publishers answer outreach from a credit union?
Finance publishers answer outreach more than any other set in our records. Across 810 finance and money sites our system has prospected, 390 contacts were pitched, 47 replied, which is 12.1 percent, and 24 were positive, which is 6.2 percent. Twelve sent a price. The platform-wide rates are 6.1 percent and 2.8 percent, so finance publishers reply at about double.
What do publishers charge for a finance link?
About twice their general rate. Seven publishers in our records put a price next to finance. On the four rate cards that also quote a general price, finance runs 1.9x, 2.3x, 2.9x and 2.2x the general price, for example $150 against $80 for a guest post and $100 against $35 for a link insertion. Thirty publishers refuse finance, loans, forex or trading content outright.
Has MentionAgent run outreach for a credit union?
No. There is not a single credit union among the 37,186 sites in our prospect records, so we have no credit union campaign to report. What we have is the publisher side: 810 finance and money sites, their Domain Ratings, how they replied, and what they charge. Those are the numbers on this page, and we say which sample each comes from.
