Are Charity Backlinks Worth It, or Are They Paid Links?

October 2026 · Link Building · By Matt

Quick answer

A link you get for sponsoring or donating is a paid link in Google's terms. It's allowed when it carries rel="sponsored" or nofollow. On the 17 nonprofit sponsor pages we checked, no sponsor link did.

Worth it: when you'd back the cause anyway. Treat the link as a bonus.

Not worth it: as a way to buy followed links. That's the trade Google's link spam policy names.

Our data

17 nonprofit sponsor pages linked out to 411 sites, and none of those links carried nofollow or sponsored. Across 15 sponsorship packages, the cheapest tier that listed a website link had a median price of $1,500.

Pages and packages read by MentionAgent on 10 October 2026. Method at the end.

What counts as a charity backlink

A link to your site from a nonprofit's sponsor page, donor wall, gala or 5K page, or a school's "community partners" list, given because you supported it.

What Google says about sponsor links

Google's spam policies define link spam as "creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings". Its first example is "Buying or selling links for ranking purposes", which it says includes "Exchanging money for links, or posts that contain links" and "Exchanging goods or services for links". So an in-kind donation made for a link counts the same as cash.

The same page leaves room for sponsorship: "Google does understand that buying and selling links is a normal part of the economy of the web for advertising and sponsorship purposes. It's not a violation of our policies to have such links as long as they are qualified with a rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored" attribute value to the <a> tag." Its guide to qualifying links says to "Mark links that are advertisements or paid placements (commonly called paid links) with the sponsored value."

On what happens otherwise, the spam policies say only: "Sites that violate our policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all."

How nonprofits actually code the link

We read the HTML of 17 nonprofit pages that thank their sponsors and counted every link to an outside site, apart from social networks and donation platforms. None carried nofollow, sponsored or ugc, and no page had a noindex or nofollow robots meta tag. Every one was a plain, followed link.

The median DR was 28, and 12 of the 17 sat below DR 40. Five, a children's hospital among them, were at DR 50 or higher. So in this sample, most sponsor links sat on small sites, and a few on strong ones.

For comparison, all 88 BBB profiles we read with a website link marked it nofollow, while chamber of commerce directories used plain links on all 35 of theirs.

What a sponsor link costs

We also read 15 sponsorship packages from charities, schools, youth leagues and local events, and noted the cheapest tier that lists a link to your website.

The median was $1,500, from $50 at a youth baseball league to $15,000 at a national education nonprofit. Six of the 15 sold a cheaper tier with your name but no link, so the link is one of the perks being priced.

That buys more than the link (tickets, signage, a gala table), but compare it with the $150 median that publishers quoted MentionAgent users for a link alone (how much backlinks cost).

How to find sponsor pages near you

  1. Search for them. We found ours with Google searches like "thank you to our sponsors" site:.org and "sponsorship levels" "link to your website". Add your town to keep it local.
  2. Check the link before you pay. Open the sponsor page, view its source and find a current sponsor's link: a rel value of nofollow or sponsored means the link is already qualified.
  3. Check which tier includes it. In six of our 15 packages, the cheapest tiers listed your name without a link.

When a charity link is worth it

  • You'd support the cause anyway: take the link as part of the package. Asking the nonprofit to add rel="sponsored" keeps both of you inside Google's policy, and the people who visit that page still see your name.
  • You're choosing a cause for its DR: that's paying for a followed link, the trade the spam policy lists first. For links you don't pay for, resource pages and outreach are two routes.
  • You're a local business: compare it with the other local links on offer: Google Business Profile links and citations.

Want links you don't pay for?

MentionAgent finds blogs writing about your topic, pitches each one a page of yours worth citing, and handles the replies with you. From $99/mo.

Method

  • Sponsor pages: found with US Google searches for pages thanking sponsors and business supporters on .org sites, read on 10 October 2026. We kept 17 that are a nonprofit's own page thanking its sponsors, donors or business partners, and dropped articles, a chamber of commerce, professional-association conferences and lists of partner charities.
  • Links: every link to another domain in the page body, with headers, footers and menus removed, and social networks, donation platforms and web-builder credits left out. Counted once per domain. A few are vendors or partner groups rather than sponsors; none of those were marked either.
  • Packages: 15 nonprofit sponsorship pages with priced tiers, found by searching for packages that mention a website link. Because of that search, this sample can't show how many sponsorships include a link, only what the ones that do charge.
  • DR: Ahrefs Domain Rating, 10 October 2026.
