Do Chamber of Commerce Memberships Give You a Backlink?

October 2026 · Link Building · By Matt

Quick answer

Usually, yes. On 21 local chambers' member directories, every profile that listed a website linked to it with a plain followed link. One chamber tagged its profile pages noindex, nofollow, which cancels that.

Check before you pay: open a member's profile on your chamber's site and look at the website link. Three checks below.

Not the same thing: chamberofcommerce.com is a national directory, not your local chamber. Its links were nofollow when we checked.

Our data

37 member profiles on 21 chamber directories, read on 10 October 2026: 35 showed a website, all 35 as links with no rel value. 2 sat on pages tagged noindex, nofollow.

Indexed: 9 of the 12 profiles we searched for were in Google.

Chamber domains ranged from DR 26 to DR 65 (Ahrefs). Method at the end.

What the link actually is

A chamber with an online member directory gives each member a profile page on its site, under a path like /list/member/ or /member-directory/Details/, with your address, phone number and a link to your website.

That link is the backlink. Whether it counts depends on three things: how the link is coded, whether search engines may read the page, and whether the page is in Google's index. We checked all three.

Chamber by chamber

MentionAgent opened member profiles on 21 chamber directories and read the website link as the page served it:

"Plain link" means an ordinary <a href> with no nofollow, sponsored or ugc value, so Google may follow it. The two profiles with no website link simply had none on file. *Two chambers host their directory on the software vendor's domain, so the DR shown is the vendor's, not the chamber's.

A chamber's DR is the strength of its whole domain. Your profile is one deep page on that domain, reached through the directory's category pages, so the domain figure overstates what one profile passes.

Does Google see the profile page?

A link on a page Google never indexes does little. We searched Google for 12 of the profiles by their exact address: 9 were in the index. Of the 3 that weren't, one was an Omaha profile, which tells search engines not to index it. No chamber's robots.txt blocked its profile pages.

Omaha's tag matters for the link too. Google's robots meta tag documentation says nofollow in that tag means "Do not follow the links on this page."

You pay dues and get a link, so it's a fair question. Google's spam policies list "Exchanging money for links, or posts that contain links" as link spam, and separately name "Low-quality directory or bookmark site links".

The policy page doesn't mention chambers of commerce or membership directories. What we can say from the data: none of the 21 chambers marked member links as sponsored, and the listing comes with membership rather than being sold as a link.

Three checks before you join for the link

  1. Find a member's profile on your chamber's directory and confirm it shows a website link at all.
  2. Check the link and the page. Paste the profile's address into our nofollow link checker to see whether the website link carries nofollow, sponsored or ugc, and into the noindex checker to catch a tag like Omaha's.
  3. Search Google for the profile's exact address with site:. If it isn't there, the link isn't helping yet.

If all three pass, the listing is a followed link from a local site. Whether that is worth the dues depends on what else the membership gives you.

chamberofcommerce.com is not your local chamber

chamberofcommerce.com is a national business directory. When we read its listings for our Yellow Pages and Yelp check, the website links on 2 of 3 Denver profiles were marked nofollow and the third had none. Treat it as a citation, not as a local chamber link.

Method

  • Directories: chamber member directories found with Google searches, then member profiles reached from each directory's own pages or sitemap. Up to 2 profiles per chamber, 37 in all.
  • Reading: each profile fetched on 10 October 2026; we recorded the website link and its rel value, the robots meta tag, and whether the chamber's robots.txt blocked the page for Googlebot.
  • Index check: one profile per chamber searched in Google by exact address (12 checked).
  • DR: Ahrefs Domain Rating for each chamber's domain, the same day.
  • Limits: every directory we could read ran on GrowthZone or ChamberMaster software. Chambers whose directories load only with JavaScript, or blocked the request, aren't counted. Two profiles a chamber is a small sample, so check your own chamber with the steps above.

Frequently asked questions

Is a chamber of commerce link dofollow?

On 20 of the 21 chamber directories we read, yes: the website link had no nofollow value and the page could be indexed. Omaha's profiles were tagged noindex, nofollow.

Does joining a chamber of commerce help SEO?

It usually gives you one followed link from a local site, plus a citation with your name, address and phone number. That's one link, not a ranking strategy on its own.

Is a chamber link worth the membership fee?

That depends on what else the membership gives you. The link is one profile page on the chamber's site, so run the three checks before counting on it.

Does chamberofcommerce.com give a backlink?

Not a followed one on the profiles we checked: 2 of 3 had a nofollow website link and 1 had no link.
