Do Citations Count as Backlinks? (Local and AI Citations)
No. A citation is a mention of your business name, address and phone number. A backlink is a link to your website. Some listings carry both, but most listing links we checked were nofollow or blocked.

Three things called a citation

A single directory profile can be a citation and carry a link. An article can link to you without your address. An AI answer can cite a page that never mentions you. They overlap, but none is the other.
Local citation vs backlink
Google's local ranking help names links among the inputs to prominence: "how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have". The page doesn't use the word citation or mention directories (checked 9 October 2026).
So a citation without a link is a consistent record of your name, address and phone. Links are what Google's page names. Buying citations is a different job from earning links: see citation building packages for what listings cost.
When a citation has a link
8 of the 9 directories we read showed a website link on at least one profile. Whether that link counts depends on how the directory builds it. When we read 25 profiles on 9 directories, 4 linked out with no rel value. The others used nofollow or ugc, sent the click through a redirect their robots.txt blocks, or showed no website at all. AI citations vs backlinks
An AI citation is the answer pointing at a page as its source. A backlink is one site pointing at another. You can't add an AI citation to your profile the way you add a listing; the engine picks the source when it writes the answer.
The two do meet: if a page that AI engines cite also links to you, you have a backlink on a page the answers already use. Our AI citation study covers which kinds of pages get cited, and how to get cited by ChatGPT covers the steps.
What AI answers cite: listings are a small share
MentionAgent runs a panel of generated buyer questions ("best [category] tools", "[competitor] alternatives") through ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for its customers and stores every source link. We counted how many of those links were directory or review-site listing pages:

The listings cited most were software directories: G2, Trustpilot, Product Hunt, AlternativeTo and Capterra. Local directories (Angi, Tripadvisor, Yelp, BBB and others) made up 0.3% of cited links and appeared in 1.6% of answers. The questions lean toward software buyers; we haven't run a panel of local-service questions.
Which one to work on
- Citations if your name, address or phone differs across listings, or you're missing from the directories customers in your trade use.
- Backlinks for ranking: Google's local ranking help names links to your business, and directory links mostly don't qualify.
- AI citations if buyers ask ChatGPT or Gemini for recommendations in your category. Check first with how to check if ChatGPT mentions your brand.

Frequently asked questions
Are citations the same as backlinks?
No. A citation lists your business details; a backlink links to your site. A directory profile can be both if its website link is a plain, crawlable link.
Can a citation just be a link?
In AI answers, yes: the citation is the source link. In local SEO, a citation is the name, address and phone mention, with or without a link.
Do AI answers cite directories?
Sometimes. In our panel, 8.5% of answers with sources cited at least one directory or review listing, mostly software directories like G2.
